H10 6gb - corrupt files, player won't play
The harddrive on my last H10 failed, so I sent it back to iRiver and they replaced it. Got a new one that was working alright for a few weeks, but some problems have risen. Not sure how much faith I have in iRiver anymore...
First, random files I put on the player like to get corrupt. I had around 1000 songs on my player before, was working fine. One day my friend picks a Beatles song, and while the player shows ID tag info for the Beatles track, it's playing a song by Streetlight Manifesto through my headphones. I think, jeez, that's odd, and when I hit the back button to investigate, the player freezes. I pop the battery out, let it sit for a bit, then start it up again. Nothing seems to be the matter, it's just the Beatles files are real messed up. I go in through Windows Explorer and see all the Beatles files have been renamed to crazy things and it won't let me delete them directly from the player. I end up having to copy all my music to my computer, reformat the player, and then transfer all the music back. Now it's been a few weeks since the reformat and the same thing is happening again. Except to more random files that I haven't even listened to. Here's an example of what they get renamed to: 08-ROT3.MP3 10-RJD~1.MP3 14-RJD~1.MP3 16-RODw.MP3 They started out with the format of #-RJD2 - track title.mp3 No clue what's the matter. The player won't let me delete these either, and I'm fearing another reformat or even worse, RMA'ing the player once again. The other problem is even more annoying. When the player starts up fast, I think it's called a warm reboot, where the OS loading screen doesn't show and it starts up directly to the Now Playing screen, I have trouble playing songs. I'll pick any MP3, usually all are affected, and select it to play. It will go to the Now Playing screen and correctly show the information, but the track won't play. It'll show the stopped icon right next to it. It won't play if I hit the play button, or if I select it again, or anything like that. Most tracks refust to play but only a few work. I have to pop the battery out, let it sit for a few seconds, pop it back in and do the cold reboot where the OS loads. From then on, the player works flawlessly. I use Windows Explorer to transfer my files and Easy H10 to compile the database. Now that these corrupt files have shown up again, I can add new files via Windows Explorer, but Easy H10 crashes when it reaches the corrupt files while compiling. This means I can't add any new music to my player until I get rid of the corrupt files. If I do a database refresh on the player, it'll just freeze and then refuse to start up again - I tried it when the corrupted files showed up before. Any ideas what can be causing this? Should I RMA the unit or is there a way to fix these problems? |

Hi! I've got iriver H10 Pure 5GB and, at first, had the same problem you're talking about. I was very upset and thaught something's wrong with my device. But, luckily, the problem has to do with version of firmware you're using. You should upgrade to the newest version of firmware, and the problem you're talking about will be gone, hopefully forever (since I had upgraded about 5-6 months ago, I never had a problem like that again). One suggestion more: if you have MTP device, and you don't use DRM'ed content (songs bought from online music shops), it would be best to switch to UMS firmware. It's a way faster and more reliable than MTP version, and you have nothing to lose.

Well, if you follow the instructions from this site, word by word, you cannot brick anything! Please, don't mistify things without a reason. It is completely safe, just as if you would install any other firmware upgrade. Firmware upgrade tool does the same thing when upgrading firmware automatically, as you would do manually during MTP > UMS conversion or vice versa. It is just necessary to apply the instructions precisely and carefully...
However, I just mentioned that option - it is not the topic here |

I've been running the most recent firmware. I think I'm going to reformat and convert the unit to UMS as soon as possible, and hopefully fix my problems. If not, I guess I'll just have to contact iRiver again.
