Shuffle with V2.51

I have looked at some threads but not seen this talked about. The shuffle feature on my 6GB doesn't really shuffle the entire selection (900+ songs). It only shuffles within 4 letters of the song title I am currently on. So if I am listening to "Fool" it will only shuffle songs with titles that are from letters d-i. It causes repeated songs and limited randomness. Is this a common feature/issue or does anyone know how this can be fixed?

I have the exact same problem with my 20 gig, and I have 2500 songs and the shuffle does not utilize nearly all of the songs. It's so frustrating!

This is a subject whgich has been discussed several times. I also wrote about this problem and I even sent quite a few mails to iRiver, but it seems they're not going to take immediate action......:confuse d:

This is a common problem and can partly be solved by using EasyH10. This program mixes up your music collection, but does not solve the actual problem.
By using this program you have to mix up your collection whenever you want to listen to new songs, as the H10 still shuffles the very first part of the collection.
But this is (of course) very frustrating to do.

Thumbs up Useful Bump

I asked iriverAmerica a question about this subject.
My question and iriverAmerica's answer:

Subject:Hello! Problem with Shuffle mode.

Hello! I'm a happy buyer of the H10 20GB us. version remix blue mp3 player. But - the shuffle mode is not shuffling all the songs; only songs that are titled with close letters at thier beginning. example: if I am listening to the song "Fool" it will only shuffle songs with titles that are from letters d-i. It causes repeated songs and limited randomness. firmware version 2.51 MTP... New product( less than a month old). I would appriciate an answer(+a fix - if possible).
Thank you all, support team,
Dima T.

Hello,

Regarding the H10 Shuffle settings, the player will shuffle through every file within your library. The shuffle settings currently work properly but tend to stay within one area of the library for a short amount of time. iRiver is currently looking into improving this feature in the future. Please refer to the support page for firmware updates.

Sincerely,
Rebecca G.

Short amount of time my butt. It does it everytime I use the player, for as long as I use it. I have to select a new song with a different letter, quite a few away from the current song. This only continues the cycle, but with different songs in the new area of the library.

I didn't notice it until the new firmware version, but maybe it's done it the whole time. It kinda sucks. I will hear 10 songs in a row that start with 'S' or 'T'.

This is a generic response. There is no way in knowing from this response if they will resolve the issue. I do need to point out that the H3XX line had a very similar problem. The latest firmware took care of it.

Hopefully there will be a firmware fix. With 4000+ titles on the player, it's miserable. Played 150 songs so far on a "full player" shuffle and all the titles have started with "A" or "B".

The term "not playing with a full deck" is apropos, I think.

Did a little more research on this

It appears that on my H10 20GB that the player shuffles blocks of 512 track when more than 512 tracks are selected.

For example, I selected about 1200 tracks in a genre for shuffle play. The first 300 songs were exclusively from A-J. So in this case, if the player would stay within one area of the library for a short amount of time as iRiver says, that short amount of time is 17.5 hours (assuming 3.5 minutes per song) which exceeds the time the player will operate on a single charge.

That's pretty unfortunate design/programming for a player that can hold thousands of songs.
