Tutorial: How to put the latest international UMS-Firmware on an H10 5GB Pure

Hey guys!
I found a way how to put the UMS firmware on the iRiver H10 PURE!
Basically, it isn't too different from upgrading a non-pure model. All you have to do, is to flash your H10 first into the US-MTP-version

Hint: Neither me nor iRiver will give any guarantee, that this will work. So do this on your own risk! But in fact, it's worth it
Please don't start, before you've read everything properly and understood it!

So, what you have to do:
H10 5GB Pure with MTP-EU Firmware Version 1.xx
--> first upgrade your mtp-version to 2.51

H10 5GB Pure with MTP-EU Firmware Version 2.51
-->now change to us-mtp-firmware

H10 5GB Pure with MTP-US Firmware Version 2.51
-->now you can upgrade to korean ums version 2.51


the step with flashing to us-version is necessary, otherwise you will get stuck when trying to update you bootloader!

explanation:
it seems, that the pure-players should not be upgraded to ums. so when trying to directly flash eu-mtp to ums, the bootloader will simply not be upgraded.
but if you've got the us-firmware on your h10, the updater thinks, that you've got a non-pure model and puts ums on your device

ums-trick: disconnect and connect your battery from the H10. then connect it to your pc. while turning the H10 on, press and hold the "o"-key, until the "emergency connect" message appears and disappears.

things you need:
- iRiver H10 5GB Pure with full battery
- Computer, which recognizes the H10 at least in UMS-Mode
- at Explorer-->Extras-->Folderoptions-->View-->hidden Data and Folders is set to "show all Data and Folders"
- following files:

Let's get it started:
1. firstm you need to update your H10 to the latest mtp version (2.51).
I think, you can manage this on your own
If you can't, see the first download-link But I'm not sure, if you should
do this change to UMS, if you can't even upgrade your player to latest
MTP-version


2. now we'll change the firmware into the american-mtp-version.
So take the .zip and extract the "H10_image.mi4" and rename it into
"H10EMP.mi4".
Then connect your player using the ums-trick. (Remember, hidden data
and folders needs to be shown!)
Open your player in the explorer. You'll find a folder /system.
There's a file called "H10EMP.mi4". Back it up and replace it against the
"H10EMP.mi4" on your pc.
Disconnect the player. Congratulation: You now have better sound and a
(useless) fm-menu.


3. The real fun starts

3.1. connect the H10, using the ums-trick, to your pc.
Then copy the bootloader into the root-folder of your player.

3.2. Disconnect H10 from PC and let it boot.

3.3. Now connect it (without ums-trick) to your PC. It will still be recognized
as MTP-device.

3.4. Disconnect it again. There will be a message with "Firmware Upgrade"
and the bootloader gets updated. (The .rom-file disappears after this
was done.)

3.5. Then there will be an error: "System files missing..."
Don't worry, this is okay.

3.6. Connect H10 using the UMS-Trick.

3.7. Now take the "h10.mi4" out of the given link (it contains the korean
......ums firmware version 2.51) and:
.........copy it as "h10.mi4" and
.........as "h10emp.mi4" into your /system-folder!

3.8. Now disconnect the player and let it reboot.

3.9. Congratulations: Now you've got the latest international UMS-Firmware
with excellent sound quality! But first, there's an error
"DB open error...", but you can ignore this by now


4. Connect your H10 to PC. It will be recognized as universal mass storage
device. So take the explorer and open your H10!
Put the folders /music, /my recordings, /photo und /text into the folder
/media! (Wow, another feature, that wasn't possible with mtp )


5. The error "DB open error" means, that your ums-device can't handle he old
mtp-database. No problem - just run EasyH10, choose
"H10UMS_5GB_FW2. 04-2.51" as model and press OK. Your database gets
restored now.
You can also use iRiver Plus for this.

TADAAAA!!!

Now you should have (if it worked like it did for me and other ones) an iRiver H10 5GB Pure with the latest international UMS firmware, including best sound quality, a not-working FM-Radio and recognition as ums-device!
(The pure does not have a tuner, so you can see the fm-menu, but there's no signal )
It also seems, that the H10 runs faster now and those hearing-music-and-watching-a-slideshow-hang-ups are gone.
So, have fun with it
If it worked for you too, please tell me. I want to be sure, that this works for every H10 Pure-model. I'm confident it will.

If you want to, then update now to UMS-Firmware 2.52. You'll find the link under the other ones on top of the page.
The update works fine, since it removes some bugs; e.g. that there were distortions after using the play/pause-key.

Next thing on my list is rockbox or linux on the H10 - suggests or hints, how to manage this, anyone?

I have just one question ... I've put H10EMP.mi4 on my Iriver and I do notice there's no soundcap. But I did not continue .. I stopped at "Disconnect the player. Congratulation: You now have better sound...." The only thing I want to know is if I will get better sound if I continue the upgrade... Hope I'll get an answer ...

hmm - ive never heard of this file
does it allow u remove restrictions for sound? pertaining to decibel levels - I already find the h10 to be prty good for sound lvls

yes, this new .mi4 is the american one!
so there's no soundcap any more
continuing to ums won't improve the sound quality on a higher level than you've got now. but you don't need the wmp10 and so on

BUT PLEASE; DON'T TRY UMS SKINNING!!!!!
i tried it yesterday and missed to read a few posts. now my player doesn't start any more *arggh*
so i need so send it back to iriver
i hope, that they repair/replace my H10.
but the mtp-ums-conversion is completely secure, so don't worry about that tutorial

I tried to ums it yesterday but it doesn't do anything after loading BL_10.exe on the player's HDD .. I followed your instructions .. but nothing .. Anyways .. I can't believe the sound quality of this little thing;It's amazing .. I listen to it even in my own house

this is a little crazy: when you download that file with opera, its an .exe!
if you use the internet explorer, its a .rom-file.
so don't worry, just rename it from .exe to .rom

and you're right - the H10 sounds damn well. i even sat in front of my pc and instead of listening to my creative cambridge megaworks 5.1 thx 530, i listened to the iriver

no...you missunderstood that one with the fm radio:
the pure-edition does not has a fm-tuner. but after changing to US-FW and later to UMS, you can see and use the fm-menu, even if there's no incoming signal (of course - no tuner-->no signal-->no radio)
I don't consider this for too risky, but everyone has to make his own decision whether he changes to ums or not.
we'll see if it really voids warranty - since i broke my player with trying to skin the menu, which isn't working on ums-converted H10s...

hi I am new to this forum, just had my iriver (h10 pure) for less than a month and tried out the mpt-->ums conversion (with fear that I might mess up with me new object of desire) but it really seems to have worked... the only problem I had is that it needed the iriver plus software in order to replace the missing files (the easy h10 software didnt do it for me, as you said)............... so thanx, it seems to work faster and the pc sees it as a usb device,

(now I have to see how to use the easyh10 software or the iriver plus which I just installed)

PS - what languages does the file come in

PPS - id never skin mine it doesnt help performance just changes gui (useless imo)

PPPS - the pc reads as usb device so does that mean u can no longer autosync w/ wmp/iriver plus (all manual)
