Virtually nothing in this thread applies to UMS mode. If you can't use emergency connect then you've got problems (usually due to the storage failing). Have you checked to see if you have the sptd driver installed? Outside of not being able to assign a drive letter it is the most common issue for UMS.

Ok, very weird becuase one day the player was perfectly fine.. The next its missing system files. Not cool
.Anyway, i've got to update my sitrep. Its now showing up as "Removable Disk (K)'. Still has "USB Connected showing up on the screen (no emergency connect or UMS version details). When i go into properties for the drive its showing up as 0kb (can't format/move files into it). I've read that someone else had this problem (on another thread). But they didnt find a solution. I'll read through this thread properly first though, just in case. Does this mean its on MTP? or is the drive screwed?

@tonz86 Continuation of our e-mail:
Earlier in your logs you had "The RPC server is unavailable", which means that UMDF couldn't start. Later you got "The handle is invalid." when trying to start the service which implies that it somehow got unregistered. This is the reason I suggested to fully remove WMP10 (including the runtime) and then reinstall it. If the fix.zip at the beginning of the thread doesn't fix it, this is the only way to restore UMDF to a working state.

(2) no (3) yes (4)no i have a h10 20gb which worked perfecly fine untill i upgraded to wmp11.. then it all went to hell... upgraded firmware as i was advised this would fix it. nope.. connects in ums mode and can put files on it this way but they dont show up on device except if i view through browser. it is showing up in device manager as h10 2gc... can someone help me as i miss my music, oh yeah by the way, hello everyone im new.. |

There are problems with WMP11 and the H10 (it can lock up the device). Due to this there isn't much value in fixing your curent problem until you are back on WMP10.

A couple days ago, I was having problems to read/see my MTP/MSC device connected; reading the troubleshooting, and applying #1 (registry, nothing needed to be changed) and #4 (installed WMP10 + fix), the device started working 'normally'. The next day - maybe due to Windows' automatic updates - the problem was back, exactly as defined: "The player shows the USB connected screen and Windows shows that the device installed correctly. Device manager shows no problems with the device, but you can not access it though WMP or My Computer", in MTP mode (MSC not recognized). Seems that something has messed up, but... what? If I should remove WMP10 to try all again, how could I do this (easiest way) without damaging the system? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks ^_^

First let me say that most problems with software are consistant - they usually won't go away and then come back. There are exceptions to every rule, but this usually implies that the hardware is starting to fail.
That said, you can remove and re-install WMP10 without doing any damage. Just go into Add/Remove programs and click on the show updates check box. The remove Windows Media Player and the Windows Media Format Runtime. After rebooting install WMP10 again and visit windows update to get all the recent patches. After that install the hotfixes that I mention above (no they are not included in any patches on Windows Update and yes you do want them.)

Yes, sure. That's why I'm wondering what could be wrong with the software I have. The point is, my mp3 device works fine on some other computers (not all, but some, and with windows XP on them, like college's pcs) and my PC also reads fine some other USB devices (to be precise, all them except the mp3 and a pen drive, which sometimes freezes Windows Explorer, but still allows me to use it).
Because of this, and considering that after I installed WMP10 for the first time the device (and also the pen drive) was working 100%, I wonder if any Windows recent update (maybe even related to WMP) could have messed with something usb-related... would this be possible? |

Yes, it's a desktop machine... but hmm I don't think it's a power issue, once I'm plugging it in the only USB 2,0 port I have (which is in front of pc, but anyway, I suppose it should have the most power). When connecting it into one of the other normal usb ports, I have "unknown device" or no detection at all as results :/

i bought my creative zen vision:m (30gb) a few months back.
it was working great and i listened to it regularly. just a few days back i connected my mp3 player as usual only to find out that it did not get detected by windows xp sp2. the player turned on as soon as i plugged it in but i got a warning message from windows xp saying that the device that i just connected has malfunctioned. the player's battery sign wasnt flashing either, that is, it wasnt charging. i went to the "Device Manager" of xp and found an "Unknown Device" next to the "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" . i tried uninstalling it and then reinstalling it but it did not help. i also downloaded the "Windows Media Player 11" but that did not help either. i used the options of "Clean Up", "Format", and "Reboot" in the recovery mode of my player but it did not work. i did not use the "Reload Firmware" cuz in that case i would have to install the firmware via USB but since my player is not recognized, it will not install the firmware. i tried the registry fix, the usb legacy....but nothing helps... i also tried to use the "Removable Disk" option of my player and connected it to another computer but it too said that the device is not recognized. since i formatted my player, i dont have any song in it and it isnt even charging now. its just a useless crap these days. any1 willing to help?? |

You need to do the one thing you haven't tried yet... reload the firmware.
When you use this option Creative devices fall back to an emergency connection stack. The very few times I have run into this type of thing, following the steps I outlined earlier in this thread allowed the device to connect to the PC again. If they don't work for you, the only other option is RMA.

As I said it puts you in an emergency mode and uses a completly different stack on the device side to connect to the PC with. It may be completly gone and even this won't work, but it is really your only shot other then just returning it.
As to the instructions, I posted them in this thread a few pages back. Basically you do everything you have done so far (rebuild/format) and then do "Reload Firmware" TWICE.

I am developing a PC application wherein I would like to acquire the license for DRM protected files in the PC and then transfer the files to the device. Is there any way to retrieve the license from the local hds and transfer to device without MTP?

Please keep in mind that while I know MTP (and WPD) quite well, I only have basic knowledge of DRM. WMLA@microsoft.com would likely be able to give you a better answer.

If the same thing happens on multiple PC's then you should look into repair/replacement options.
