ZIP Fix

This Zip Fix is amazing,
After countless time with iRiver and Creative support for the H10 and Zen Sleek and no results, this fix worked effortlessly.
Thanks so much for the help.

{Attachment 3408}
Purpose: Informative. I have now collected the information I was after, so this is purely provided as a guide to help you resolve your problems. The information provided here won’t work in 100% of the cases (especially when it comes to power issues) but walking through the appropriate section will fix most users.

Below are a couple of work arounds that I know of for different classes of problems. Before you start make sure you have WMP10, XP SP1 or higher. If you do not have XP SP1 or higher you can no longer get it from Windows Update, so you must either order a CD or use the following link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Note that you will likely have to re-install WMP10 after installing SP2.

The behavior you are seeing is the first step in determining your problem. If the behavior listed doesn’t match what you are seeing you can safely skip the corresponding section.

1) The player shows the USB connected screen and Windows shows that the device installed correctly. Device manager shows no problems with the device, but you can not access it though WMP or My Computer.
----This can either be the registry permissions problem or the software registration problem. See #1 and #4 below.

2) The player shows the USB connected screen but Windows is unable to find a driver for the device. The device shows up as unknown in device manager.
----This can either be the OS descriptor problem or a software registration problem. See #2 and #4 below. This same behavior can occur if you are having the power problem although the setupapi.log will usually list the device as a “Bad Device” in this case. You may also need to go through #3 below.

3) The player does not show the USB connected screen or your device does not show in device manager (even as an unknown device).
----This is likely the power problem. See #3 below.

WARNING: Editing your computer’s registry should not be taken lightly. Always make a backup before making any changes. See the following link for details:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;322756

1) Permissions Problems:

Quick and dirty:
Try running the tool from the following link:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;810509

Note that after downloading it, you have to run it with a -l switch from the run line or the command line (like "Pnpreg –l") you can't just double click it.

If the tool fails, the manual steps are:

Open regedit and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\S YSTEM\CurrentControl Set\Enum
Right click on this key and choose Permissions…
Verify that “Everyone” is allowed “Read” access.
If you don’t see this, add “Everyone” giving them “Read” access.

Do the same thing with:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\S YSTEM\CurrentControl Set\Enum\USB
(This key should be set to inherit from the Enum key, but that may not always be the case.)

2) OS Descriptor Problems:

In device manager, double click on the Unknown device and go to the Details tab.
In the drop down list select Hardware Ids.
(If the hardware ID says USB\Vid_0000&Pid_000 0 this is not your problem, instead see #3 below.)

Take the first line and strip out all the letters and symbols (so all you have left is a number). For iRiver devices it should start with 4102.

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\S YSTEM\CurrentControl Set\Control\UsbFlags
Look for a key name that matches the number you wrote down.

Delete this key.

When you connect your device again, Windows will now interrogate the descriptor (which it normally only does once).

3) USB Power Problems:
Behavior: Device does not show up in Device manager (or anywhere else).

This can be caused by several things but they all boil down to the device not getting enough power, try the following:

First, try connecting with a fully charged player and leave the AC plugged in when you connect. (Thanks to VitalSpark for this tip.)

Power off your PC. Unplug the power cord for 4-5 seconds to give all the capacitors enough time to discharge. Boot back up and try your device. (Possible charge on the USB bus.)

Plug the device into the rear USB port rather than the front port.

Plug the device directly into the USB port (no hub or extension cable).

Try using a powered USB hub. (Note that some will not work, so if you can, borrow one before buying one.)

If you are overclocking, don't. It can change the amperage to the USB bus. (If you don't know what this means, you aren't doing it.)

Even if you aren't overclocking there is a possibility that some of your cmos/bios settings have been changed. Try resetting the BIOS back to its defaults. If you aren’t using a USB keyboard try disabling legacy USB support. (Thanks to ghostskate for pointing this out.)

Try updating your chipset drivers. (IE: VIA, nVidia ect.)

Last resort: Try buying a new USB 2.0 controller card. (If you only have USB 1.x on your system you might consider this option earlier on. You will be amazed at how much faster your songs will transfer over 2.0 then they do over 1.x.)

3.5) Problems with ‘E’ firmware:

I’m putting this as a new “3.5” because I suspect that the problem people are having with the ‘E’ firmware is that it is slightly more sensitive to the power problem then the US firmware is. TimD found that putting the US firmware on his player resolved his issues. You can see his thread here:
My UK bought H10 5g is US firmware? this seems to resolve the problems!!!!

4) Software Registration Problems and Missing Files:
Behavior: Device shows up correctly in Device manager and possibly My Computer, but not in WMP.

Re-install the latest WMF redist from:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;891122

(Optional): Install a DRM performance fix for subscription content from:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;902344

(Optional): Install a sync fix for large files from:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;895316

You will likely need to play all your DRM content in WMP to re-indiv and reacquire licenses if necessary before syncing it to your device.

If the above didn’t fix you, you can also try re-installing WMP10 itself form:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/mp10/

How to get help from me:
Take the following files from your system and put them in a zip archive:
C:\windows\setupapi. log
C:\windows\wmsetup.l og
C:\windows\debug\wpd \wpdtrace.log

Mail me the zip along with a detailed description of your problem.

I've added a poll to see what you think the behavior of the script should be. It is actually very easy for me to have the registry checked every time you boot the computer. (Really it just means not cleaning up after the script is done and leaving the service to start every time windows does.) Right now it does not do this because I wanted to leave the system in the same state I found it in.

For a bit of background, if you don't know what causes the registry problem it is almost certainly from the bundled software with one of your devices. You may no longer have the device (a friend's USB drive?) or it may still be on your system. It won't cause trouble until you try to re-install it, but once you do you will be back to the same problem as before.

This thing has been such bad luck for me that I'm scared to walk around with it for fear of a jet engine falling on top of me, or a runaway freight train to come cranshing in from a recent fissure in the ground opened up by satan himself. . .

If the powered USB hub doesnt fix it I'm contemplating returning it for *pukes* an iPod...

At least those will be recognized by my computer correctly

that and it makes me mad when people call iRiver an offbrand of iPod...
why did iRiver have to put the i in front of their name, why?

Wow, I just read this entire thread, tried a things here and there. Learned a lot, but nothing helped me.
I'm going try the powered USB trick for my T30 tomorrow. I was examining the Current Power State of different components and I noted that my T30 aka Unknown Device was in the sam power state as my cooling fan, "D3". I found it funny/strange that the monitor and the processor were in a "D0" power state. I'm not sure on what it all means, so I'm going to try the powered hub.

T30's are a bit different then H10's. They don't generally suffer from the same power problem so a hub isn't likely to help. (But try it anyway if you have access to one.)

The biggest thing about T30's is the battery level of the device. If it's low it can cause you trouble. (Virtually every T series I've helped with can be traced to a low battery.) Also make sure it isn't set to be rechargeable if you have an alkaline in it. After swapping out the battery, try a different USB cable. The entire OS descriptor section in the main post is mainly applicable to the T series so try running the script I posted as well.

I have a device instance id of "USB\Vid_0000&Pid_00 00\*misc. numbers\symbols", and thats what brought me to the power issue. Are the numbers of the key I'm looking for "*misc numbers\symbols"? Or is that not the problem because of the power issue prefix of USB\Vid_0000&Pid_000 0?

0000, 0000 is a "Bad Device" (that's what the log calls it). I point people at the power troubleshooting section because the same steps apply for this (ie: chipset drivers, bad cables ect.) not because it is actually caused by insufficient power from the USB bus.

Try putting in a fresh battery first then go from there.

Feel free to mail me if you get stuck.

[Edit] I should note that I have only been able to figure out a problem similar to this once, all others were either truly bad devices or the ones that weren't I couldn't solve. [/Edit]

Okay, the poll didn't get me anywhere. Anyone who has successfully used the script has no need to come back here to read this.

I decided to update the script to prompt the user if they want to protect the registry on each boot. The default answer is no. This way, anyone that wants it can have it but those that would rather not can opt out.

Other Solution if T30 installation leads to instant shutdown and reboot of PC

In my case the reason for not installing my t30 was a conflict between my on board USB 1.0 and my new USB 2.0 PCI card I installed recently.

If you have problems with installing yout T30 using an USB 2.0 PCI card in addition to your onboard USB 1.0 you may consider trying the following:

Solution:
I deactivated the onboard USB in my BIOS , deinstalled all USB devices in the device manager and rebooted. Windows XP reinstalled automatically all USB devices/ports and now its working perfectly!

Carsten

4,700 downloads and no one bothered to tell me that the script I posted didn't work on non-English systems? I've updated it to be universal. I apologize to anyone running a non-English system if it errored out telling you that you needed to install SP2.

Also I am still interested in finding all the root causes of the registry permission issue. If you do have this, and are willing, send me the files in your c:\windows\inf directory that start with OEM and then a number. (zip them together since there will likely be a few of them.) I’ll compare them to others’ systems and look for commonalities.

I've tried everything...

Here's what's happening: I bought a Samsung YP T7JX a few days ago, brought it home, charged it, plugged it in... WMP 10 wouldn't detect it. After trying everything I could think of and everything I found on the internet to get it recognized, I finally called Samsung customer service, who told me it was a defect in the unit. So I returned it and bought an iRiver H10 20GB yesterday, brought it home, charged it, plugged it in to my computer... and WMP 10 wouldn't detect it. Both players were detected by Windows itself, had their drivers installed correctly automatically, showed up in Device Manager under "Windows Portable Devices" as Samsung YP T7JX and iRiver H10GC, and showed on the units themselves that they were correctly connected ("USB Connected" shows on the iRiver). Here's a list of things I've tried: checking permissions in the registry (both HKLM>System>CurrentC ontrolSet>Enum and Enum>USB have "Read" status for "Everyone"), uninstalling all USB drivers and rebooting, deleting everything under "USB" in the registry and rebooting, manually resetting both players, rolling back WMP 10 to WMP 9 and then reinstalling WMP 10, buying and trying a powered hub (the belkin FSU234 that was mentioned here), running the fix executable provided by Ted Yo... and probably other things I've forgotten about. I also checked to make sure umwdf was running; it was. I tried to stop and restart it, but it wouldn't start after it was stopped... telling me "Access is denied". But it started again automatically upon reboot. Anyone have any ideas? Oh, and I have XP service pack 2.

Much thanks in advance,
Garth

Send me mail with your logs and I'll see what I can do. (zip c:\windows\setupapi. log and c:\windows\debug\wpd \wpdtrace.log)

Quote:
deleting everything under "USB" in the registry and rebooting
Don't do this, it just removes half of the PnP entries. If you use device manager to uninstall the devices it will remove them correctly including these keys.

Quote:
rolling back WMP 10 to WMP 9 and then reinstalling WMP 10
If you ever uninstall WMP10, you should always uninstall your portable devices after. I could go into all the details, but "bad things will happen" if you don't.

Quote:
but it wouldn't start after it was stopped... telling me "Access is denied".
That is quite interesting. I may need to ask you to run some tools to narrow down why, but I'll look at the logs first.

yeoleg's problem was with a freeware program called "XP Protect" it goes through and "protects" you by removing your access to many elements you normally have access to. In general it doesn't look that bad but it does get a bit overzelous and prevents you from being able to start services ect.

Essentially it tries to do the same thing as running as a limited user (and even a bit more) but does so by removing all the privlides from your admn account. My advice is: just run as a limited user so you can still use an administrator account to administer your machine.

Note: I did not root cause this problem. I asked him to try creating a different account to see if he could get his privlidge back. When that failed he called tech support and they helped him find the offending service.

try this one...

Hi all...

Ive got a problem... My T30 acts like its turning off and on whenever I "USB Connect". The battery is fine, fully charged... If I still had songs on it, I would still be able to hear the songs on it... So it isnt the battery itself.

It used to work... When I bought it, all I had to do was plug it in and everything was running 100% fine... This sad event occurred when I tried to plug it in, and didnt quite plug it in correctly - I missed the hole ever so slightly, and did not get get the plug to go flush into the usb port...

Now when I do connect the T30 via usb, I make sure its off before I put in the plug, I turn it on... and then it will act like is turning itself off after a few seconds... and my mouse will not work periodically... it seems to work in between the standard windows sounds for "device connect" and "device disconnect" (ie - the pc sounds like its connecting and disconnecting within a few seconds. And all this is synchronised with the T30 screen displaying a "USB Connect" sign and then "USB Connect" disappears.

If I disconnect the T30 from the usb cable, I usually get a bubble thingy pop up that tells me:

"Found New Hardware

A problem occurred during hardware installation. Your new hardware may not work properly."

I have also checked the device manager, but there are no relevant drivers listed in the device manager...

I plugged it into a rear usb port (was previously using the front port)

And my optical mouse decided that it didnt want to work either... have since bought a cheap wireless optical mouse, and that works fine... not sure if thats important... maybe it is?!?!?!

Ive also tried choosing the format option on the T30 itself... and Still no luck...

Anyway, Im hoping that someone can help, otherwise I may introduce my T30 to a brick wall at high speed......... Cm
