I know it's been a while since you posted your question but i just bought a 20 gig iriver on woot and am curious to know if the hard drive is as easy to swap out as my Archos.
It turns out that while the Archos is a standard 2.5" notebook HD the iriver is a 1.8" HD which I'm not familiar with. Also Hitachi/Travelstar make the drive with the pins at the end or on the side. I would assume that the pins for the iriver are on the end.
Have you had any other replies or broken into your unit on your own? http://reviews.cnet.com/40GB_4200RPM...-30910718.html
is the address at cnet where they review the drive and this:
http://www.memorylabs.net/40lahdd1noha.html
is where you can buy them.
let me know if you get into your unit. the Archos i bought was a 5gig unit also and you're right, just not enough room so i found a site that diagramed how to crack it open and swap out for a larger HD. Now I Have a 20 in and carry the 5 as a back-up.
luck,
rob

Triple post (and please try not to do it in the future, double posting is frowned upon enough )!
EDIT: And threadsurrection!

Anyway, the 5gb/6gb units use 1inch microdrives (branded "ST1"). I believe that physically swapping H10 drives is possible (people have opened them up, taken the drives out, but then just replaced the original one), but there might be issues with firmware, etc, and I don't think anyone has ever tried it.

The 20gb H10s use 1.8inch drives, which are the standard for DAPs. These are also used in the H1xx series, H3xx series, PMP, iPod, Gigabeat, etc (the list goes on)...

so this is a spot for my first post. The drives in the 5/6gb are pretty much CF type II microdrives. Hitachi and Seagate make them, and they're pretty much in all 5-8gb players. The largest out there is an 8gb at the moment and you can pick them up for about $150. You can then ebay your 5gb one if you want to recoup some of the costs. I don't know about the irivers, but with the Rio Carbon you can even use a Type I CF flash card and essentially have a 4gb flash player instead of one that has a drive, though I know your goal is to go larger.

As for me, I was a loyal Rio person with a karma, carbon and forge. The Karma is gone and the 20gb H10 will serve as it's replacement until somebody comes out with a player sporting Sigmatel's STMP3600 chipset. That'll be the gold standard for all that care about quality in their DAP. Till then, iRiver it is.

also, with the 1.8" drive in the H10; has anyone done a drive swap and gone larger? Anyone know the largest drive that will fit in the h10 without modding?

As I have a broken HDD in my H10 5GB, I looked into different options.
I disassembled the unit and went for a search for the Seagate ST1 5GB drive WITH the flex cable, but without any luck. I was told by a distro that it's a Seagate OEM special version, which is not available anywhere else as iriver or as used on ebay. It could be that the electronics are the same as on a CF drive, but I am not sure.
