system files missing - with a twist!

I know "system files missing" has been asked a billion times before, and I know my case can't be too different, so:
one day, i turned my h10 5GB (color, with radio) on, and is said to me "system files missing, to restore the system files, connect H10 to iriver plus." and at the bottom of the screen is says EU 1.10
ok, so I checked misticriver for answers, and the iriver website, and all that.
and I learned that I should connect the devise in UMS mode, and update the firmware, or maybe format it.
but - here's the twist! I can't boot it to UMS mode! I know I should press the O button, the keep pressing it the turn the device on, and wait for the UMS screen.
but the UMS screen never comes. so I'm never in UMS mode, and I can never update my device, nor format it.
please, someone, I'm in great pain without my music

Me too....I'm living now in Ireland and got an H10 5 gig. Worked great for a month, then yesterday at work the dreaded system files missing. So far I can't get my computer to recognize the device and trying to turn it on with the o held doesn't do anything either. Have tried all different ways to get into ums mode with no luck. What's the deal if none of the fixes seem to work. Really frustrating. If anyone could help I would be stoked.

Guys, have you taken the battery out for a few seconds PRIOR to turning it on whilst holding the "O"???

Yeah, I tried that with no luck. The computer will only seem to recognize it as a piece of hardware to be safely removed, but is no longer a drive f: and can't be found anywhere else. Mine doesn't seem to be able to go into ums mode. Is there anything to do, or should I punt kick this thing against the wall and buy something different. It's killing me not to have tunes, and I use the voice recording function to learn pieces of music from the people I play with. It seems to me that this product is unreliable and poorly designed to have this kind of problem so common. Was nice when working, but useless and frustrating now.
