Yeah, I know there are media keys available, but I prefer it this way.

But MattyJ has recommended a plug-in for WinAmp that should give me the same functionality (roughly), so I'm gonna give that a shot.

Can't believe I never saw this.

Well my vote is for foobar2000 as it pretty much does everything you could think of relating to audio playback, encoding, replaygaining, renaming, masstagging, etc

winamp. i like it because its easily skinned and i dock it to the top of my screen with a hide option, thereby elminiating the need for a player box (unless need be). furthermore, the universal hotkeys make pause, play, etc... really really easy whenever the phone rings or whatever event may occur - even if your in the middle of something in another program... and you can move back or forth or volume up or down.. hotkeys really pwn me.

*pause = ctrl alt home.. nice and easy on my laptop keyboard or my bf's full sized*

Foobar2000 has a steep learning curve but once you climb it you will adore it. It pisses all over winamp and takes a huge dump in mediaplayer's face.

Twinned with BSplayer for video you can play pretty much everything except Apple's proprietary shite. Bsplayer will play almost everything and is also EXCELLENT with subtitles.

I've also got a great plugin for winamp called ControlFreak which links up via bluetooth to my mobile phone - I can browse the media library and queue up tracks on my mobile, brilliant for the lazy. It also pauses the music for me when I make or receive a call and flashes up the song title when a new track comes on. Seems flashy but not sure I could do without it now!

Also if you want the visualisation or video you can just resize that window and put it as always on top, then put it anywhere. Milkdrop has by far the greatest visualisations I've ever seen too, knocks WMP's for six!

I'm currently playing with amarok in gnome... it's pretty good although doing funny things when I try to add a song from the suggestions bar.

I'm not really a media player person but I just splurged and brought an 80gb drive to store all my music/videos/files on as backup (got sick of the worry of having only one copy of my music when it outgrew my computer's harddrive) so I thought I may as well play musi c through th ecomopter rather than just the line-out jack of the iriver.

As a side note, the iriver isn't getting much use at the moment - I finally got a car so instead of spending 1.5 hours each way to uni on a bus it's now just 30 minutes in the car and i'm enjoying AM radio (774 and abc newsradio). It's a pity, I just don't like to listen to music when I drive.

Kin, I don't know about foobar but I have used BSplayer a lot. Well it is sure a good program but it can't beat Media Player Classic. Have you tried it. Full Support with subtitles without crashes (subtitles in BSplayer was buggy) and plays everything. I mean everything, even apple's shity formats...

Snap! If you also install the gUSB plugin you can plugin your iriver player of choice and control it from the sofa of your choice.

For Video I'm still using Powerdvd for the same reason as above.
