Iriver Clix/u10 Failed MTP Device
I have a problem to do with the Iriver Clix not being seen in WMP11 and My computer. It seems to not be able to install the MTP devices.
Symptoms - On this computer I installed the new WMP11 from the clix install cd over the top of the WMP11 beta that was already installed. Connected the clix and a 'found new hardware' came up. I let it search anywhere it recommended. In the end it says there was a problem installing a "mtp device". Checking in the device manager it say there is a portable devices -> "iriver clix". Although it says that there is a (code 1 - Disconnecting and reconnecting the clix makes it pop up again. - Uninstalling and then directing the install driver path to windows\inf does not work. (i think i screwed that up by copying a good wdpmtp.inf from another computer which worked, but i'd tried it b4 doing so too and it didn't work) - Does not appear in WMP or in My Computer like it does on the other computers. -Possible explanations + extra information This is a windows copy that supposively is "sp3" but there is no such thing according to microsoft website. It installs everything "unattended", including WMP10. This copy is on two other computers in my household with WMP10. The iriver clix seemed to work perfectly on those, so i decided to upgrade one of those to WMP11 (non beta from cd). Although that computer was a slow one that can't really handle it, it still seemed to detect and work fine with the clix. So now, i've basically ripped apart my computer trying every thing from deleting windows media player 11 from my system (without luck mind u... even after system restores and safe mode manual deletions of just about 1/2 the windows system directory). I think this is where my major problem lies. By reinstalling and overwriting and not proper uninstalling. Also, just to say, this computer is the best of the 3. Doesn't appear to be a usb problem either as we have a few mp3 players/cameras/flash cards that have all worked in these. None of these use WMP, only quicktime and sony sonicstage. -Conclusion From all this, i can conclude a couple of possibilities. 1. Overwritting the beta with the non beta screwed it up. 2. Combination of dodgy copy of windows + components of the computer = problem. 3. By ripping up this computer deleting everything i have in fact made it harder to actually fix it. Sure it works on the other computers, and i suppose that is fine. But those are not easily accessible to me most of the time. Anyway, i've googled and searched these forum boards for a couple of days straight. I've never posted on a forum board before asking for tech help so you can imagine that i'm down to last resorts here. Any advice you can throw my way, i'd be appreciative. Also need any extra information don't hesitate to ask. -Phil |

Hey Phil, welcome to Misticriver
You could try updating the BIOS This can be done by visiting the PC manufacturers site. For Dell PC's visit this link http://support.dell.com/support/down...=19&l=en&s=dhs I had the same probelm when I first got my player. The PC recognised it was plugged in, but it coudn't access it, and WMP didn't recognise it as a Sync device. Although my problem led to the dreaded Blue screen of death after plugging and unplugging so many times. Installing and uninstalling drivers aswell. After updating the BIOS, it was as if I had a new PC, it recognised the player, and WMP gave me a nice popup welcome screen with the players' image Hope this helps... __ |

Oh stupid me!!!
Installed the wrong bios (Asus A8V deluxe instead of the standard) but for some reason it only screwed up windows. Lucky! This is the reason it's taken me a while to get back to reply... So i just reinstalled windows again - yes, the "unattended completely dodgy sp3" one! And excellent to say it works!!! Everythings works as it should and i'm happy. Comparing against quicktime itunes, and i'd say THAT one reason why the ipod is so popular. The software just works, it seems stable and it's made for complete idiots! I love it! After looking through WMP11, it seems pretty cool, but it's slow and too flashy for functionality. I've had it crash and quit a few times on me and i've only just had it. For others who also have this problem, the only likely cause of the problem could have been installing WMP11 over the top of the beta, although there could be a tonne of other reasons too. (Or this could be a unique case!!!) Has anybody else had any problems with installing the normal ver. over the beta? |

I have the exact same problem, even down to the dodgy sp3. Only difference is that I have WMP11 beta 2. I wanna fix this, but i'm too scared to update the bios, since i'm a n00b when it comes to that stuff.
Say, could this thing have been fixed if I just installed the MTP device driver 5.2 that's available for download? If it is, can someone upload it to this site, since it kinda requires activating windows update, and i'm not too sure what'll happen if i let it, but i don't wanna have to reformat comp again. Will installing/updating this help?

I found something that may help you.
First, the device install is not your normal driver install you are really just reregistering a device to the Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework. Think of this as downloading a flash application and needing macromedia to run it. With that said there is a link to the Framework earlier in this thread. I believe the id of the Clix device was updated from the time iRiver initial passed the information or Microsoft made and error in entering into their WMP setup programs. One note Clix installed on a third machine without this fix, but this morning I discovered is installed not as a clix device, but another MTP device with a similar id. ------------------------------- Inside the WPDMTPHW.INF file there is a listing for the iRiver devices, but the id for Clix is not included. This is the file that determines how to install the drivers. If you double check your setupapi.log file you will see the device_id the Clix your computer sees. For the two computers I have installed my clix on; the id was USB\VID_4102&PID112A . When I added this id to the list of iRiver devices listed in the .INF file, performed a driver update for the device everything worked perfect. ------------------------------- WPDMTPHW.INF is in your $windir$\inf folder. This resolves to c:\Windows\inf or C:\winnt\inf on most windows machines. Do not confuses this with wpdmtph.inf which is another file in this folder. The two files work together, but you only add the line to the file in all caps with the W at the end. To double check which id you device is sending to the machine look in setupapi.log (at the end) to see what id was used for the last failed device install. This file is in $windir$\ so c:\windows or c:\winnt ------------------------------- My setup: iRiver Clix Win XP Pro SP2 WMP 11 Beta 2 installed on two machines: 1) two year old P4 box - home handles Rhapsody to-go account and music library, this one does not charge via the USB ( a common problem with the ASUS motherboard usb, low power ) 2) brand new top of the line Win XP Pro SP2 (this handles my podcast, using WMP for the sync, and charging of the Clix) ------------------------------- I hope this helps. Please backup an files you modify, make sure system restore is turned on and perform a reality check before you work with windows systems files. If you don't feel comfortable making a change you probably should not make it. |

Same Problem FIX
I had an installation issue on my Win XP Pro machine not recognizing this MTP device. The error stated "Service installation in this INF is invalid". For those of you that may experience the same, my error was solved by doing the following:
Download Windows Media Player 11 or use the WMP11 file from your CLIX install CD . With a program such as WinRAR or WinZIP extract the file "wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu.exe" There should be a few EXE files: wmp11.exe - Windows Media Player 11 Program Files wmfdist11.exe - Windows Media Player 11 Distribution Pack umdf.exe - User-mode Driver Framework (THE IMPORTANT ONE!!!) 1) Uninstall the the CLIX via device manager, this ensures the bad MTP driver is not running. 2) Run umdf.exe that you extracted (see above) 3) RESTART your computer 4) Reconnect your CLIX USB There is NO need to uninstall or reinstall WMP11 This worked for me..hope it works for you ! |

Hi guys !
Same problem over here @BaykerhasaCLIX: I tried your solution but when I try to open umdf.exe it says "An equivalent or newer Version of UMDF is already installed on this system" @Nu-to-go-you-know: I would like to try your fix but got some questions. What line did you exactley enter in the WPDMTPHW.INF file ? I simply added %GenericMTP.DeviceDe sc%=MTP, USB\VID_4102&PID112A ;iRiver PMC to the file but it wont let me install the player Greetings, BonZo0 |

What I did to get my Iriver and U10 to be seen, because I had the exact same error that Bonzoo had.
My device was being seen as a 2.0 USB and that was it. So I... Opened controll panel clicked on system opened device manager selected the 2.0 USB device right click to properties chose update driver chose (advanced) chose rom my location chose Don't seach. I will choose the driver to install chose a portable device chose standard MTP compliant device. This basicly forces Windows to see the device for what it is. I also put in a USB PCI card that I had laying around and that didn't make a diff. As I seem to recall it didn't exactly work the first time and so I reinstalled my drivers for my motherboard. Then I redid the step above and it worked. My comptuer still has a hard time detecting if it is plugged in and I have to go to the controll panel and have it look for hardware changes. Try this
I bought a iriver clix 2GB on ebay.ca in June, 2007.
I have an MTP device error when I install my iriver clix 2GB. How did I fix it? uninstall MTP device. download wmp11. english version: http://redirect.mydown.com/mydown/pr...24&p=0&j=0&m=1 chinese version: http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...-x86-zh-cn.exe use winrar or winzip unzip it to a folder. use these steps to run it. 1.wmp11.exe 2.wmfdist11.exe 3.umdf.exe 4.wmdbexport.exe Then run windows media player. go to device manager, refresh device. I saw iriver clix in the portable device instead of MTP device. My problem is fixed. |

I have tried all the above fixes however I still can't get my computer to recognize the clix because I cannot get the umdf.exe to run with out an error. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

arggg, it's annoying. i've tried out everything above. i think, installing the english installer from the iriver-cd ruined it permanentely.
cause iriver plus 3 is a really minimal-feature-program i want to use wmp11 even though i hate wmp (but must respect its album cover view and its ability to recognize tag-changes made in different programs like mp3tag). iriver plus does not watch my media-folders (does only an initial scan), neither does it recognize tag-changes. further is it impossible to change that stupid list-view to any other view-type. simply annoying. BUT mtp does not work on my pc and i'm not in the mood to do a windows complete-install. |
