Question editing ID3 tags: open source? full v2.4 support?

Hi all,

what's your recommendation to mass-edit ID3 tags?

My current setup is limited to iriver plus 2 for a U10 2GB (thus UMS). It's almost impossible to edit ID3 info there: It takes just too many clicks and navigation in order to edit a single entry, instead of a full range.

What I want instead, is editing lots of entries at once. This may be done e.g, by

* spreadsheet-like operation: copy/paste of multiple cells at once
* database-like operation: search and replace of entries
* plain text edition: a simple editor with regular expressions (such as vim) in order to adjust entries for my needs

My problem is mainly due to malformatted ID3 tags which do not follow any real standard, but do abuse former limitations for a temporarily best workaround. iriver claims full id3 support up to v2.4 - but I do not see all possible info within iriver plus, nor may I configure the sort lists within the u10 for my needs.

Example: listening to classical music, I want to navigate not only by album and artist, but most of the times by composer. Thus many old ID3 tags name the composer within the artist's file...

How may I mass-edit MP3 info? At the moment I do not see any import function to iriver plus (is there any?). What could I do next? I guess the easiest option is to catch all info from the .mp3/.ogg files directly, edit this wherever possible, rewrite this info to the mp3 files and then use iriver plus in order to build its database from the files on the mp3 player? ... or use http://pmplib.sourceforge.net/
etc. directly

What's your recommendation? I'd prefer open source software to Win...

Mp3tag is pretty good and it's free:

Thanks, that's interesting. I'll have a closer look.

ok, it got Windows 2000/XP/2003 only - but I could live with that.

However, a former strength is now a weakness: it supports freedb, which is gone by now.

I would stay with ID3 v2.3 tags as most gizmos are able to read v2.3, whereas v2.4 has limited support and is from a technical standard inferior to v2.3

I haven't used Mp3tag for a while (I mainly use Tag&Rename) but as far as I remember (and also according to their website) you can also import tag information from Amazon. By the way, there are efforts to save freedb so it might be continued.

I agree about the limited support.

But what do you mean by inferior? I thought the main difference of v2.3 to v2.4 is UTF-8 support - especially for the main focus of iRiver for the Asian market this looks like a major improvement to me!?

Otherwise, http://www.id3.org/id3v2.4.0-changes.txt does not look that much inferior?

For the moment, v2.3 would be good enough - but iriver plus doest not even support the full v2.3 range (such as sorting by TCOM!?)
