H110 Firmware (Europe) - Why format?

I noticed on the iRiver website that there is H110 firmware as well as H120/140 firmware. Fine. I'm assuming that the older models are different enough to need slightly different firmware.

But I noticed that the H110 firmware also includes the re-format disc feature. Now my understanding is that it is only included as some PCs cannot format drives of over 40Gb. But doesn't the H110 only have a 10Gb or 15Gb drive or something?

So the question is: am I missing something here?

It just means that you can reformat your player without needing a PC, if you should need to.

Possibly useful if you swap the hard drive with another microdrive in the future?

Well, yeah. But the chances of someone not having a computer but having a DAP are pretty slender aren't they? (Actually I do know someone with an iPod but no computer. He has to go to his Mum's house to load tracks on.)

The specific justification for the format was that 40Gb+ drives could not be formatted on some PCs. It seemed a bit strange that the command was not only available on machines which have drives way smaller than 40Gb, but hat exactly the same reason was given in the official description for the H110.

I'm not querying the rationale behind the inclusion for the H120/140 (even though I'd much rather it was an optional extra, or a whole lot harder to invoke).

It's more likely it's because all of the H-1xx series firmwares are all very much the same, perhaps with a few very slight differences. It'd actually take more work and money to add the format option to the H-140 firmware and not include it in the H-100, H115 and H-120 series. Much easier just to work on a single piece of firmware than two different types

Plu sof course there's my other point; if someone wants to upgrade their microdrive, which will probably be eventually possible, they have the ability to format it with only the player.

It's there because you need to format the hard drive using FAT32, and some versions of windows 2k and above can only format drives using NTFS.

Ah. Now that makes more sense.
I tried the new format feature tonight, and was a little surprised to see that it doesn't result in a totally blank drive - it creates the RECORD folder.
(Major selling point - it doesn't recreate iRiver catch the digital flow!)

Huh? As far as I know, they can all format drives to a FAT32 filesystem.

I believe that the firmware for all H1xx series players are the same, they just name it differently.

It's because it's been reported that some versions of windows (maybe all?) can't format an entire ihp-140 in FAT32 as the disk is too big. Apparantly.

Maybe it's a restriction of the FAT32 filesystem, although I doubt it.

We had this same problem at work, the only way we could format a drive above 30gb in FAT32 was to use partition magic, partition manager or Win9x.

Win2k/XP insist on making any attempt an NTFS drive =/

Altho FAT32 supports very large drives (up to 8 Terabytes), it becomes very inefficient, because the cluster sizes become massive (Which will lead to lots of wasted space). NTFS fairs better because its cluster sizes are always around 4KB; too bad NTFS is a bit too complex for an MP3 player.

Not quite. the 110 firmware is different because obviously it employs a smaller capacity drive, which has a 16Mb buffering capacity, instead of the 32Mb in the 20 and 40 gig models
