As I understand it, no--only a playlist can act as a "pointer." Of course, your single file would be available thru the db in all its various fields: artist, album, genre, title.

If you don't want to duplicate the song, you must do like Mike said and use the DB function.

PS- I think you attached the wrong picture.......

yeah i did attach the wrong picture....so basically as i understand it then...everyone who doesnt use db....has duplicates of their files to display in artist and genre? if i juust put my songs....say just under genre...would that slow down my startup time?...and i saw a topic a while ago that said that the more folders u have the less startup time u have...is that true?

If you want to search both by artist and genre, that is the perfect reason to use the db function (altho I would recommend using Tag Database Tool (TDT))--that way, you don't need to "double up" on your songs. And the extra boot-up time is gotten used to (with 29 gb of music, 6100 songs in 350 folders, I have about 60 seconds to start up).

More folders lessens start-up time as opposed to simply having "loose tunes" in the root directory, or few folders with hige numbers of tunes in them.

If you're dead set against using the db, you could always file the music by genre as well. I just would avoid duplicating music--a waste of what might be precious space.
