cdex settings

Hello,
I wanted to know why when I encode to OGG with CDEX my files always are VBR and not CBR. Is there a way to change that in the settings? I have been trying to find a way but can't see it or I am just dumb lame.

keep the VBR regardless, as it improves the sound quality in a given amount of space.

OGG Vorbis is a VBR-only codec ;] (ABR is a kind of VBR) and it does not matter at all, filesize is still predictable, there is no problem when replaying (even iFP's are chcecking average not "current" bitrate) and VBR is always better (sounds better) than CBR :]

So it will always be VBR? Does anyone know a way to make a OGG file not bigger than a 128-160 kpbs and sound better? I normally set mine to 190 kbps but they show anything from 160 kbps up and it's VBR.

make it OGG@Q5 (quality 5)...

it will "produce" file which has average bitrate of 160kbps, and be the best possible at this point

OGG@Q4 will be ~128kbps, but you can not only use "4", "5" but also "4.5", "4.1", "4.85" and so on

This is not true.

Imagine a one minute file of constant sound. The best VBR to record this in will be to use the same bitrate all the way through, i.e. CBR.

Pedantic, I know.

this is not true lack of words to describe that... but I'll try...

the point of CBR is "to encode every frame with the same bitrate", and "the same bitrate" means NOT "the same quality" for say... pure tone and complex music part (metal, rock, full orchestra), don't you think?

the point of VBR is "to encode every frame with the same quality", and "the same quality" means "different bitrate" for pure tone (low bitrate) and complex part (high bitrate)

:]

(bah... I know you shown the only issue when VBR=CBR, but... it is NOT real-life situation ;P :] )

Actually if it digital silence the VBR algorithm will go down to the smallest possible size anyway. So if your CBR rate is set higher it'll sound exactly the same as a VBR version and be bigger. So in that case VBR is still better than CBR.

Vorbis is a VBR only codec and it's designed that way for quality reasons. Set it to -q5 or -q6 and be happy.
