Using the music menu, rather than browse

Hi,

Yesterday, I bought an iRiver e10.
My first iRiver, and first time on this forum, i other words, I dont know much about these devices!

I decided to go with iriver, rather than an ipod, because I perfer not to use additional software.
I use winamp as my player of choice, and just wanted to use windows explorer to drag-and-drop files to copy on to the MP3 player... not dependent on itunes (or equivalent)

When I copied my music over, I found that I could only access my files via the browse menu, and not the music menu.

In the box was some software (iriver plus 2), and I know that will allow me to access my files via the music menu, but I didnt really want to install more software.

I will install it, if it is necessary to use the music menu, but is there another (simple) way? Does everyone with these MP3 players use this software? If not, what is your method?

I appreciate any info and/or help, im still learning

Thanks,
occhiso

Hi occhiso, and welcome to Misticriver!
It is not possible to copy music using explorer, and access it in the Music menu.
This isnt specific for iriver, it applies (as far as i know) to any drag'n'drop player. If you want to use the Music menu then you have to use some software to create a music database. You can use the bundled software iriver plus 2, but the newer iriver plus 3 is recommended. There's also EasyPMP, which creates the database for you if you already have copied the music. That is what im using.

Ok,

Thanks, I appreciate your reply (and welcome)

I guess ill give "iriver plus 3" a go.
I had a look at that EasyPMP, but I must have used it wrongly or something, it didnt quite do what I expected.

Not to worry, im sure this plus 3 software is ok to use, just had bad experiences with other bundled software.

Thanks again,
cheers,
occhiso

Welcome to misticriver, i'm also quite new to iriver. With iriver Plus 3, you can still use your "drag and drop" method through Windows Explorer, however you will then need to go to iriverPlus 3 and go to Tools -> Portable device -> Update Database. This will then "update" your database so that the player will recognise your music as songs and let you browse through them in the Music subsort. enjoy.

ok, thanks, ill give that ago.

I dont mind too much about using the software, I just would have perfered not too.
At least i can still see all the music using explorer, etc.
I believe (dont quote me) that an ipod arranges all the music in such a way that if you try to use explorer, you cant get music from it, without itunes.

So far, im really liking my e10

Thanks for your reply, im off to install iriver plus 3 now

Hey Dude, welcome to the mistciriver,

One other program you could always try is Media Monkey. It is basically the same as EasyPMP, but it has an easier interface, and works with more mp3 players than the e10. I think it's an awesome program!
But my personal opinion would be to use iriver plus 3.

Thanks for the reply.

I have actually installed iriver plus 3 and have been using iriverter to convert videos. 2 additional peices of software, but I dont mind too much.
Im glad its not like the stories of heard about ipod, at least I can still get music off it from a pc without using iriver plus 3

So I am using the "official" software now, although now really impressed with the layout of the program, not the greatest music collection management software, winamp is MUCH better but it does its job of transferring music well, so it'll do just fine.

thanks for all your replies,
occhiso
