My E10 ate my baby

No. Not really.
But it is being a bitch.
1. It freezes alot.
2. There are ALOT of songs doubled when I look through songs on the device, not PC. Eg I go Music>Artists>Dream Theater>Octavarium> and it comes up with the song the Root of All Evil 4 times, and only one file actually works. On the device there is only actually one file, it just comes up with four on the Menu.
Does anyone know what I mean? THis is happening with nearly all my songs, and when I hit shuffle, it goes through about 30 seconds worth of tracks that dont actually work.
Help?

Edit: I noticed alot of people are complaining about how the shuffle feature sucks. Its because you have to hit shuffle once, leave it on "Now Playing" and press the down arrow when you want to go to the next random song. Pressing Shuffle again will just go between a few random orders.

I see, your songs doubled. Did you use the drag and drop method to put in songs?? Or you use iriver plus 3??
The different is that if you use the drag method, the songs will only appear in Browse device. So, you might not find it under your songs menu. If you use the drag method and didnt find the song, suppose you use back iriver plus 3 or other programm to transfer songs and when you do that, it update the database and *poof* extra tracks come out. That why some songs are doubled.
Not sure if i quite understand what you meant, sorry if it didnt help.

go to iriver plus 3 and use the database update feature under...tools i think. works like a charm and will remove corrupted files, or if you have dragged and dropped rather than using iriver plus 3, will manually add these songs properly to the database. good luck.

Also if you are managing your E10 music outside the iriver plus 3 software you can always use EasyPMP. This will also update the database. Search thread for EASYPMP. Great software - free too

About the freezing, try upgrading to the newest firmware version (1.04).
You can find it here:Iriver E10 Firmware 1.04
When you've downloaded the file, put it in the root directory on the e10.
Then you disconnect it, and then it will start upgrading. DONT TOUCH ANYTHING! Dont connect the cable or something. When it has reboot 2 times, it will start normally. But now, the text is korean! To change that, just do like this:
goto the last option on the main page (the bottommost arrow will dissapear then)
the sixth option on the next page (click down 5 times)
the first option on the next page (click right)
Then, just choose the language you want. Now, theres a good thing with the new firmware, if you got the right theme it displays album art!! To fix album art, you can use this app(assuming that you already have the pictures): Artfixer
Then you need this theme:Clix-style theme
(just click the button with a little arrow that pointing downwards).
Then, if you've have some album art and use one of theme, it displays both rating and the album art .

Artfixer seems great, however, it doesn't help you to add album art on the format that E10 can read. E10 requires an ID3 tag inside the MP3 file file (or equivalent for WMA etc) containing the picture.

Artfixer only downloads and copies the pictures. Maybe it would help if you don't already have album art among the music files, and you later use iriver plus 3 or some else program to insert album art into the music files.

Someone should write an application that copies the "folder.jpg" or "albumartsmall.j pg" INTO the music files. And that would be a rather complicated task, since there are many different music file formats to modify.

Artfixer DOES do that, you start it choose a album(it needs to be in windows media player library), and then you press Fix button, then it stands album art, then click 'browse' (if youve already have a album art) or else you can use it to search for album art. When youve find it, youve just press apply or whatever it stands, and then waits. When it's done copy over the songs with iriver plus 2 / 3 or whatever program you use(you cant just copy + paste over the songs) then you use one of the themes and Voilá!

But are you sure that it actually IS Artfixer that adds your album art INTO your MP3/WMA files? How do you know it is not iriver plus 3?

I could try Artfixer myself, and see if it updates the MP3 files.

However, im not using Windows right now, and i don't have iriver plus installed in Windows, but i will try to see which programs updates MP3 files, Artfix, iriver plus, both, or none of them...

On the other hand, i'm starting to doubt that E10 actually requires the album art INSIDE the MP3 file. I may be completely wrong here... It's just that my own experience is that only such MP3 files will show album art. But maybe iriver plus 3 adds album art to the database somehow. I'm using EasyPMP so i don't know for sure. I was just expecting everybody else to have the same problems as i have...

By the way, excellent Clix theme! I love it. Thanks for reminding me of the themes.

EDIT: I might be wrong here... Reason: I studied the DB.DIC file (the one that defines the layout of the database) and guess what, album art is mentioned there. ("AlbumArtPos" is one of the database records.)

I've tried it on my computer WITHOUT internet, and it did work with artfixer. It embedds the picture in the mp3 / wma file - So it will work as soon as you update the E10 with iriver plus 2 / 3. I didn't know that iriver plus 3 could apply album art, since im using iriver plus 2 .

Ok, thanks for confirming that! Now it's obvious i was wrong about Artfixer. I'm reeeally the right one to criticize Artfixer, havent even tried it yet... But i made that assumption from the text on Artfixer's website.

But once the picture is embedded, you don't need iriver plus 2/3. Neither any database updater, like easypmp.
I have confirmed that with my E10. I copied the music using Explorer, Album art is showing both in the Music menu, and in Browse Device.
But only when i play songs that have the embedded picture.

For whatever reason, iRiver has never been able to get a shuffle feature to work without glitches. They've got sound quality down to a science, but not shuffle.

I'd never actually noticed how stuffed up the shuffle feature was, until i read this thread a few months ago. I don't mind it too much, as it allows me to vaguely guess the next song, but still have it kind of randomly chosen.
