Question E10: Linux compatibility

Hi
I've recently bougt an iRiver E10 here in Sweden. Must say it's a very nice player. The problem I have is that iRivernordic (the nordic importers of iRiver products) says it's linux compatible, and this is the one reason i choosed the iRiver instead of other players, which it really isn't. The compatibility it really have is that you can mount the player as an ordinary hard drive as it is UMS-firmware in it. When you have transferred your songs to it and unpluggs the player you can not find the music under the Music-menu as it hasn't updated the internal database. Instead you have to fetch the music via the Browse-menu which is both slower and with lesser functionality than the ordinary music-menu. I wonder if somebody know how to update the database via linux.

I've tried almost every way I can think of and the most successfully is to use EasyPMP (http://pmplib.sf.net) to create a database for the U10, since the U10 and E10 is quite the same player in many ways. The problem is that the U10 doesn't use the same database-format as the E10. The U10 have their database in 2 files under the System folder (U10.dat and U10.idx) while the E10 have 3 files under the System folder (db.dat, db.idx and db.dic). I'v tried to replace the two E10-files db.dat and db.idx with the two U10-files I've managed to create, but it won't work.

Anybody know some program I can use or how to solve this problem? I'm open to any kind of idea, easy or difficult, as long as it doesn't implement switching to another operating system on my main computer.

I'm aware that E10 uses a new database format (4th generation), which is totally different from 1st (H100/H300), 2nd (H10), and 3rd (H10Jr/U10) formats. For this reason, you can't use PMPlib (i.e., EasyPMP) for E10 at this moment.

I'd like to implement database reader/writer for iriver E10 in PMPlib, but I didn't crack the database structure (especially for db.idx). Analyzing a database structure is a time consuming task, and I don't have time now.

If someone in this thread is interested in supporting iriver E10 in PMPlib, let's share analysis results.

Use EasyH10 or PMPlib if you don't like iriver plus(1/2/3) and WMP.

I also would like to be able to update the database from within linux. While it is nice to use playlists and be able to sort by artist or album etc. The songs are still playable after loading them in linux by browsing the device in extra, browse device, music. I like to listen to my music in album order so this works fine for me.

From this and your previous post I might just have to call you the most retarded person I have ever had the displeasure of listening to.

Linux is for a certain group of people, and there is a reason you aren't in it.

What a shame it doesn't fully support Linux. I would most certainly bought it. But I'm not that interested in manually browsing 6GB of music. Never the less, quality sound is my biggest criteria, and i trust iRiver to deliver the best sound on the market. So I just have to keep wating...

I've been on the edge of purchasing iRiver products before, and the thing that stopped me then, was when I (in disbelief...) read that they obviously cut a deal with Microsoft on that particular player... because it was Windows Media Player dependant! I couldn't believe it.. that player would have been mine if it didn't unexpectedly NOT support Linux at all.

...and why Linux? (except for, it's FREE?): http://home.no.net/mfafa/snapshot2.jpg (It feels just as good)

Good night.

I'd like linux support too. I'm happy to help in any way I can. I've got one of these babies and have to update the database using vmware at the moment.

I started a discussion thread about reverse engineering of E10 database:
http://nyaochi.sakura.ne.jp/pmplib/i...p?topic=2.msg8
My motivation is not for linux compatibility (I just don't want to use iriver plus). Once a database reader/writer for iriver E10 is implemented in PMPlib, EasyPMP will run on linux environments.

Use EasyH10 or PMPlib if you don't like iriver plus(1/2/3) and WMP.

EasyPMP 0.13 alpha supports iriver E10 at last. See:
EasyPMP now supports iriver E10: prepare your player without iriver plus 2/3.
