H120 80 GB Mod
Hello everyone,
my first post here after being a lurker for what must be years. I managed to lose my H140 with 60 GB HD, so it's time for a new player. I have an H120 on the way, as well as an 80 GB 5 mm Toshiba MK8022GAA (iPod 6G pull,) which I hope to install using Stolltech's IDE to ZIF method. I hope to report back within two weeks. I'm not sure if I should look around for an old 1.8" HD or CF card to crack open to use the female connector from, or solder directly to the iRiver board/connector somehow. Also not sure if the iPod HD will be crippled to prevent it from working in other players. I have an adapter on the way to test it on my computer. Suggestions are welcome. |

Hello and welcome to posting on Misticriver.
I'm sorry to here of your loss , that would have been a horrible feeling I don't have any suggestions , but I do have a dead hard drive , which is of no use to me , if you need parts (there's a email link under my name). Also you may be interested in this thread New Toshiba 1.8 HDD's... but I dare say you've probably already seen it. |

I might still have the dead 20 GB drive from my original H120, otherwise, I can dig up a CF card somewhere. |

Update: sorry about the long delay. I couldn't get the drive to spin up when connected to the PC adapter I bought on eBay. Since I had no other way to test the drive I shipped it back to the seller for testing. It checked out OK, but I still couldn't get it to spin up.
My concerns are the following: - the drives from iPods might be crippled by Apple so they may not work outside iPods. - Mario Stoll's soldering skills are much better than mine, so looking at the teency tiny wires and contacts I'd have to solder I feel I was too optimistic when I decided to try this. Possible solutions: HDs from Zunes might work. We need some sort of pre-made adapter. There are plenty of adapter boards on eBay, but what's needed is an adapter cable. |
