New Hard Drive Problems

I bought a 60GB hard drive to fit inside my H140. I have done a full format of the disc but i am not seeing the full 60GB as pictured...

Is this right? Or is there something amiss here....

This appears normal to me. It all equates on how bytes are defined.
Congrats on your new H160.

Yeah, i kinda figured that. I have tried to fit this drive to my player and get the check hard drive message. Although i dont know whether i formatted it right. So i have just done a full format and am going to fit it again. If i still get the check hard drive message i will scream....

*EDIT* The drive functions perfectly in my enclosure.

most of the time you have to format it in the player (computer wise anyway) but maybe players too not sure

No, you cant format it in the player if it doesnt have the firmware on it.

Anyway, i tried to install it last night and am getting the following error when booting with rockbox,

ATA error: -11
Insert USB cable and press a button.

Then with the iriver firmware the Check HD connection message appears.

I contacted the seller and he now tells me the drive was from an ipod. Well i wish he told me in the firat place.

Oh, and to top it all off, my battery has started to balloon. Looks like i will need a new battery and a new hard drive. Will need to wait until payday for that though, as im pink lint. Will need to start using the H320 now...

what i was saying was put the harddrive in the h140 and format it through the computer then put firmware on it. i just reformatted the stock 20gb in my h320 like that and no problems

My battery balloned before, try it with the back cover off before deciding that hard drive has had it. in my case it turned out the Hd was fine and i managed to open up the casing just in time.

Don't know if you got it figured out yet...but format the drive in your H140 through USB 2.0. The player does have (iriver) firmware on it's onboard cmos. Unfortunately, the onboard format won't work as their is no defined partition yet on a new drive.

The big problem comes from the fact that windows xp will not do a FAT32 format on a drive that large (it will do NTFS...but that doesn't help), so use a third party formatting/partitioning utility such as swissknife (free).

You can remove the battery and get your hardrive working by using the ac adapter, but the downside is that you'll have to disassemble everything again to get the new battery in.

EDIT: I now see you have an ipod drive, which adds a step...you will have to delete the partitions and recreate, otherwise the proprietary structure (thanks apple) will screw you up. There are directions for this somewhere on misticriver forums.
