With regards to your first edit, there is no firmware on the drive, so you can format to your heart's contents and it won't make any difference.

I see they are finally out but they seem rather expensive. Looking to either upgrade current H320 or buy used H340.

I was under the impression that apple drives used a ZIFF connector and wouldn't physically fit a hxxx series iriver. what am i missing here?

the 60GB drives were IDE, only the 80GB uses ZIF, IIRC.
