Will opening your player void the warranty?

Hi, i have a 120, and there is this really annoying piece of dust under the front cover. I was wondering if opening it up (i saw a couple sites that showed how to) and just cleaning the cover, then putting it back together (carefully, of course!) would void the warranty. do they have any of those stickers on the inside that will reveal if you have voided the warranty?

no stickers, it will void the warranty, but if you don't tell them, then you're fine. I have opened mine up several times, and I've heard that you should be especially careful when putting the black screws in the side,as the plastic may crack

I've got a couple of dust particles under the front cover of my iHP-140 too, I daren't take it apart just to get them out them out because of the warranty thing, but I will try the vacuum cleaner on it over the sockets in the top because that's where I think the dust gets in.

Instead of taking it apart, you could try a vacuum like Haku suggests, or try a can of compressed air, as found in any computer or office store. You can probably blow the dust off the screen. My guess is that dust enters around the line in/out jacks and the remote connection. If it were me, I wouldn't risk voiding the warranty over a piece of dust.

Also with opening the player up, your far far more likely to get a lot more dust in then you are to shift it.

I started a topic about this about a month ago after some dust got under my screen. A can of compressed air completely solved the problem for.

yeah, i see how the compressed air would work, but on mine, this particular piece of junk is stuck to the front cover on the inside, and it's pretty large. i tried hitting it to see if i could dislodge it, but no luck. there's no way a vacuum or compressed air will dislodge it.

i used a very small screwdriver, but it wasnt good enough to get the motherboard unscrewed. Oh, and no one I have talked to even knows what a t5 torx wrench is. The best I could do was find a t6 at radioshack, after I carefully explained to the clueless sales associate what a t5 wrench looks like.

However, if you take the case apart, then you should be able to use compressed air, or a vacuum to get the dust out without touching the motherboard

Hey all, wow its been a while since ive been here (not that i havent been using my player, just didnt realize i would come back and find mods and firmware upgrades galore). Anyway, i had the exact same problem and i did fix it....sorta. Ok so i had dust in the screen and it was really obvious that it came through the remote whole, so i go to home depot and buy a screw driver. They had a few t5s. torx is metric, and is more commonly called hex or star in the u.s. (boy did it take me a while to figure that one out). Anyway i crack it open and get most of the dust out with just a kleenex. I wouldnt reccomend doing that. Use an eyeglass cleaning cloth or something. And dont get it wet cuz even just water will streak. Anyway i get rid of the dust and pop it all back together. Works fine. (btw u will be shocked at how miniscule the hd is). Anyway, the dust came back, and i lost the screw driver so now ive still got the same problem. its not worth fixin if itll come back again in two weeks. However, if i remember correctly (and i dont know why i didnt thinkof this then), it wouldnt be too hard to slap a tiny piece of electric tape right under the port on the inside. I dunno, give it a shot. Personally, im gonna try the compressed air, but i dont think itll work.

p.s. this is what the alphabet would look like if q and r did not exist.
