Changing harddrives?

has anyone attempted it yet? what are the dimensions of the existing one? I'd like to know, would consider a mod up to 80gb if someone can get another drive into the player..

They use a 1.8" size drive, and 80GB doesn't exist in that size, and you'd be lucky to get a 60GB
Drives on their own at retail prices are not cost effective to consider it.

Shame, since I could really do with 60GB or 80GB too. Give it time and the hard drive manufacturers will catch up.

iriverlounge.com forum Buckaroo_Banzai, aswell as giving AMAZING reviews of a new 28Hhr battery he has tried out, says that "Toshiba announced the start of the production of 30GB and 60GB 1.8" harddisks at the end of august or september". Don't know anything else about it. He posts on misticriver too - maybe try asking him more. It would be great to have 80GB, but 60GB (ie 20GB extra) would be a good start. I also agree with rshea ... it is always only a matter of time.

From what I understand the iHP120 uses a single platter 20GB drive while the 140 uses a two platter 40GB drive. I'm pretty sure the new Toshiba drives are single platter for the 30GB and double platter for the 60GB. If that is the case and the dimensions are the same then you should be able to upgrade a 120 to 30GB and a 140 to 60GB. How cost effective that is I don't know as I haven't looked into it yet.

Iriver need to remove the 9999 file limit though otherwise for many all that extra space is going to be pointless (unless you sample at monster bit rates I guess...)

yeah i ran into the same problem with a DMC/Xclef HD-500 (80g).. it was limited to 9999 tracks which i hit around 65gb or so. they gave me a beta firmware that removed that limit and added OGG but now the player won't boot or connect. bleh.

Hi everyone, long time reader, first time poster....

I remember reading somewhere that there was a firmware/hardware limitation that will only recognize 20gb if it is a h120, and only 40g if its a h140. SO, if you drop a 60 gig drive into a h120, it'll show up as 20gb...

But surely it would still show up as a 60 GB drive in Explorer? Which is all that matters, seeing as you could still transfer all your music/data over and it would still show up ...

If your saying that the iHP itself will only display 20GB of info, even if there's a 60GB HDD installed, then that would mean the unit having to select which songs/info to display, right? I doubt the player has that sort of intelligent control over what it displays ...

Some clarification would help ...

i am guessing that it will only recagnize a 20 gb or smaller partition, kind of like in msdos. (remembers old dos system with 340 MB hard drive and more than 5 partitions.)

I found it, I was going by stripwax's comment on the iriver interational forum...

Yea, so if a 1.8" 40 gb hdd cost $259, and your 20gb player cost $289,you have now spent $548, and are left with an extra 20 gb drive. Then why wouldn't you buy an H340 and some flash players. Now lets say an H340 cost $450 (I remember reading that somewhere), then you still have $98 for accessories, etc. OR...you could buy an H140 (about $329 these days) and still have $219, with which you could buy an iRiver flash player. Maybe I'll try this when my warranty runs out, or my hard drive is filled, or if I just go crazy.

Uh... what are you on? I've NEVER found a H140 for $329. The lowest I've ever found it was $389 from some generic shady dealer online... I paid $329 for my H120... and the cheapest I have found the H120 was like 280 on Newegg (mind you AFTER I purchased the player from the local CompUSA *grrr*).

Here you go, nextag.com keeps a price history chart for each product.
Here is the one for the iHP-140 (you'll notice that it came down close to $325 at one point) http://www.nextag.com/serv/main/buye...iriver_ihp-140
Here is a similar chart for the iHP-120 which shows it dipping below $280.
http://www.nextag.com/serv/main/buye...iriver_ihp-120
I purchased mine at newegg.com for $280 in june, after waiting several months.
Basically, the longer you wait, the cheaper it will get. Question is, how long will you wait ?

I have no reason to wait. I purchased my H120 for $330 at CompUSA about 3 weeks ago
