What are they waiting for?

Creative. Sansa. iPod. Sony.
All these companies has one great thing in common: they all have a 16gb flash-memory mp3 players.

What iRiver are waiting for? 32gb? I meant, people have long waited for large capacities flash players, and now that we have that (yes, I think 16gb is pretty good for music) - iRiver seems to fall behind other companies.
I keep reading this site's news, and other sources, but none have mentioned a 16gb flash player by iRiver.

Can someone please correct me here? Is there a hope for such a player in the near future (lets say, still in 2007)?

iRiver have barely gotten their first 8GB flash player to the market, so the chances of there being a 16GB DAP released by them before the end of the year are somewhere on a par with Elvis landing his UFO next to Loch Ness and having afternoon tea with Nessie.
That said, that's a roughly 14,000,000-1 chance, which is the same as winning the (UK) National Lottery, so it is possible...

In all seriousness though, iRiver probably won't even announce a 16GB player before the end of the year, let alone start selling one.

You can't buy lottery tickets near Lock Ness, we still don't have electricity in Scotland
I think you can buy scratch-cards though, they don't need an electronic terminal...

I was thinking I could buy one over the net on my phone, but of course you wouldn't have mobile coverage

There's a post office in Aberdeen which can handle telegrams, maybe you can sort something out that way

Hey, now, stop complaining. Edinburgh and Glasgow have electricity! Inverness is still using gaslight, though.

Sony have just released the smallest, lightest 1seg-compatible mobile-TV/DAP/PMP available in up to 16GB versions.
I personally think it looks quite nice, though the price, the TV function that doesn't work outside of Japan and the lack of expandable memory is a bit of a shame.

Link.

All of these flash units would be more palatable to me if they at least had
removeable SDHC card slots; surely that's not too much to ask for?

Not if you buy from Cowon, Creative or Sandisk (well MicroSDHC in Sandisk's case...).
