This looks fantastic.

Anyone heard anything different to 'a release this year'?

Best guesses anyone?

I see that the W10 will reportedly support mini-SD cards.

Are these not limited to 2gb presently? Or are there "mini-SDHC" high-capacity cards planned - just like the 4/8/16gb that are available or being developed for the regular SD card...

And if so, based on their history of firmware updates, is it likely that Iriver will offer support for a high-capacity model with a firmware update? (Otherwise, a 2gb card is hardly an improvement...)

'Reportedly'?
It's in the specs, it has a MiniSD slot.

I believe there are MiniSDHC cards being developed (there are definitely MicroSDHC cards on the way, so it'd be odd to skip one iteration entirely).
However, unless iRiver specifically state that it's MiniSDHC-compatible, then it won't supports them.

No idea. That would be predicting the future, something none of us are overly-gifted in.
And whilst you may feel that the ability to increase storage capacity by 25% isn't a useful feature, a lot of people will, so there may be no incentive for iRiver to make the W10 MiniSDHC compatible.
