Which iriver player we are talking and what type of firmware it is using?

For UMS player, iriver plus or drag and drop usually works.
For MTP player, you will most likely need to install WMP11 for the driver, but you can use Winamp or MediaMonkey to manage files and sync.

Last week I switched from WMP to Media Monkey and IMHO it is far better in every way, definitely worth a try One of my favourite parts is that you can add album art to each song
