Just use a piece of sticky back plastic, its cheap works very well as it is thicker than a proper screen protector and is removed simply by peeling and then rubbing off the glue that remains. Can be cut so size and are around £3 for 1m square so dirt cheap thats like 40 screen protectors sumet like 7p a protector.

You can buy clear adhesive paper at any office supplies store. It works great for covering and protecting lcd screens of all types. Just cut it to the desired size and it will stick like a sticker.

It can be rubbed off very easily with a finger or some meth spirits from a pharmacy.be careful to keep it away form the players body and only on the screen as it can fade the colour of the player.

Goto a Jessops as they sell PDA screen protectors. I have to say I never had much success putting a protector on my 420, it always had a blemish on the plastic... so in the end I didn't bother with one.. AV420 is sat on the side unit acting as a bookend now days anyway.

First using a ruler find the size of the screen and add a little bit so it overlaps and protects the whole screen and a bit of excess.

Now cut the sticky plastic to size (for best results use a guiloteen)

Use you finger nail to open a corner about 3mm (less than a quarter inch), if you are right handed choose the top left corner of the player, top right if your a lefty. Place it in this corner and firmly but not as to damage the player stick it down

Keeping your left hand pressing this corner down, hold the paper side and begin to pull the paper very slowly down and rightward (removing it from the sticky plastic.

As you do rub your left finger over the edge as the paper is removed if a bubble appears pull the plastic back enough to remove the bubble and use your finger to rub over the protector bit by bit to get back to the edge of the paper.

keep going till the end and you should have a perfect screen protector applied. If you are a lefty just do the instructions reversed!

Will this effect the picture quality? Like.. because its not 99% viewable.. Just wondering is the stuff ur talking about the stuff you use for books? I think I'll see what they have at the local electronics store.. I think they have PDA screen protectors. hopefully they are a little better viewable and.. without that much adhesiveness..

In the case that comes with the iriver.. can u put a silk.. bag (like the ones with sunglasses) around the PMP and then put it inside the case? Or is there not enough room.

I suck.. at making screen proctors so i guess its worth the 14$.. if i can get one precut and without that much adhesive.. I've also had my problems with.. metho.. back in the day.. i think i used it to clear some sticky crap and.. my game boy and.. now its.. between white and red.. not quite pink though.. so be careful!

It doesnt do to much to the screen it looks fine, I use them on all my pocket electronics.

Its possibe to put the bag around it but I suspect it would be difficult as the retainer clips are a pain in the *ss.

Yep red and white, meths is dangerous and you must ensure to not get it near the rest of the player.

lcdprotector.com is great (also sells on eBay, sometimes for slightly less)! if you don't see your model at their site, just ask and they'll find what you need.

I just peeled mine as I wanted to buy some iPAQ/Palm type PDA screen protectors for it and needed to gauge the right size. Turns out Best Buy (big US electronics store) only had little Palm sizes in stock. I stuck the factory vinyl protector back on while in the case but take it off for viewing.

When I do get a decent sized screen protector I plan on trimming it to size and using the following method to ensure no bubbles (trust me on this, it works great):

1) apply clear (cello/Scotch, etc. depending on what country you're) in tape to the mic hole and over the buttons.
2) clean the screen with 1/2 window cleaner, 1/2 water and wipe with a lint-free cloth (NO PAPER TOWELS!!!)
3) put a 2cm diameter puddle of window cleaner/water solution in the middle of the screen (obviously the PMP should be on a flat surface).
4) gently place the new plastic cover over the puddle so that the solution begins to spread towards the edges of the screen.
5) the cover won't stick to the screen yet so slide it around to center it.
6) using a wet finger (more solution) SLOWLY squeege the solution from the center to the edges. use another lint-free cloth to pick-up and spill over.
7) repeat #6 all the way around until the platic sticks firmly to the PMP.

I've used this process on PDAs but it comes from my days of plastic and RC model building. It allows you to center the cover exactly while ensuring no air bubbles get trapped between it and the screen. The window cleaner works great; don't use just water. As an alternative to the cleaner try a few drops of dish soap (just enough so that you begin to gets suds but VERY few).

How important do you think a screen protector is for the PMP? i.e. does the screen get dirty really easily? is it supseptible to breakage? etc

A protector will prevent scratches, the screen itself is good for defending itself agains big ones but the little ones that refract the light get annoying so a screen protector is really valuable and when you sell it the newer it looks the more it will fetch, my old gameboy would get a lot more than others I have seen with screen scratched beyond recognition. This is because I use a screen defender. Plus the screen attracts dust due to its static build up and the protector some how seems to repel this.
