Because mine was brandnew and I haven't played withone before I can't tell what the firmware does improve or not, I can say I am impressed with it tho. I bought the PiMP because my AV420 has problems playing Divx encoded stuff (it would lose the audio-visual sync.. the files play fine on the pc, just not on the Archos unit). So far I like it.. just waiting to see about the games etc. |

Give it a try and if you have any issues let me know, I can host the directory structure for you if needed. |

All you need is to unzip the .tar file to the root of the PMP and run the firmware upgrade. |

Welcome, you guys, to MisticRiver
@ SimonD: From what I gather, ( I was thinkin' of upgrading to the PiMP myself), whether it be articles, reviews, or general user comments, to move from the AV420 to the PiMP was (for the most part) seen as a downgrade - it's interesting/rare to see someone who has made that jump, so I was wonderin' - is it possible for you to do a quick mini-comparison between the two ? ... Cheers, ManchesterUnited4Lif e |

Walshie, I did that initially myself, but found that when it told me to reboot I did and it came back up in Korean, I tryed changing the language but nothing worked, yet when I connected it to my PC and did the iRiverSys folder change manually it worked for me. |

The Archos unit is lovely, well made and certainly feels good in the hands, the screen is great, the controls are brilliant and generally the device just looks 'right' my reasons for changing are simple. I have a lot of downloaded content that I want to watch on the device (I travel alot) and unfortunately when encoding in Divx (more with 5.2.* I think) I always end up with a sound sync problem, now this isn't because the file is out, if the file is played on the laptop\pc it plays fine, yet when played on the Archos it is always out. Running vdub on the original and new files shows the same preload, same audio length and I just got fed up with it. I think that were I simply playing mp3's I would have stuck with the Archos, but because my content is 99% video orientated I had to move to the PiMP, already content that wouldn't play on the Archos works a treat on the PiMP. I guess I would agree with you about it maybe being seen as a bit of a downgrade, but I look at it as being able to actually watch my encoded programs and not worrying about the sync issues any more. If and when Archos manage to get the issues sorted I guess I may go back to using it full time, until that time however the PiMP wins. (and yes, I check the Archos boards.. Yahoo and websites.. all the time to see if the issues are resolved, it's not just me who has complained about this syncing issue). Hope this helps?? |

@SimonD - cheers for the comparison - and hell yeah, it did clear up my decision somewhat - if I choose to go with a PVP for my next player purchase, then I want it to at least be able to do what it does, well. From the sounds of it, the Archos ain't for me - I have ton's of recorded stuff too (I'm fortunate enough to have Gigapocket, and a Freeview box hooked up to my W1), so I wouldn't need the Recording features of the Archos. The FM Tuner (much like the one on my iHP) is IMHO also necessary (don't wanna miss Chris Moyles, and Colin & Edith now, do I The only thing that's dissuading me right now 'bout the PiMP, is the lack of an LCD Remote, and that's impossible with the 'phone Jack setup in place on the player. I seriously don't want to be pulling the unit out of my bag to change tunes or albums Another problem I fear, is Firmware for the PiMP - or the lack of any meaningful future upgrades to be exact. I understand the PiMP has OTF Playlisting, which is half the problem sorted - but my main concern now is Gapless Playback. I mean, if we can't get it on iRiver's flagship 'H' Series, then how am I to expect it to be delivered on one of their fringe players? One last question (honest |

Yeah the PiMP has OTF which is auwsome!!!! I just bought a PiMP 140 version as well. I'm using the 120 for development and testing use. Yes you can set the timeout values for the screen to turn off and leave the mp3 playing in the background. the one thing i don't like/i want is two different power profiles for music playback and video viewing. What do you mean prices to come down!!! there already down below the H340 and H320, goto JBHIFI and you can get a PiMP 120 for 670, i got my PiMP 140 for 740. Also there is a bug in the backlight function, where if you are using the PiMP and have the backlight to turn off in 5 seconds, even though you are using it it will still turn off!! Ok, so I flashed my PMP-120 to the new firmware and now I'm having nothing but problems with it. Before I flashed the firmware, my PMP was working fine it just had a few quirks I was hoping would be fixed in the newer firmware.
Now that I've flashed it to 1.25 I have the following issues: -Doesn't turn on about 50% of the time, I have to take out the battery and put it back in and then about 25% of the time it will finally turn on. -When it doesn't come on, it often says "Boot Failure" and won't finish loading. -The few times I can actually get it to boot properly it won't take a very long charge, I can get MAYBE 20 minutes out of the battery before I get LOW BATTERY and it shuts off. UGH! HELP! Does anybody have the original firmware flash? |
