Best Video Codec to use?

2-3 days to go before my PMP-120 gets here.

While I am waiting I have been busy encoding some DVD's and other videos I have on my computer.

I use to do all my encoding with DIVX5, but seeing that the PMP dose XviD I have been trying that.

Dose anyone know what the best codec to use on the PMP, or am I on the right track by using XviD?

btw: I have 3 series of anime (Full Metal Panic, Arjuna and GitS:SAC), 2 seasons of CSI and a couple of movies (GitS, 5 Starwars films)

Can't offer you any advice re codecs, but I noticed you mentioned GitS:SAC... Is it any good? Volume 1 has just been released locally, and I am wondering if it's worth buying.

I'm semi local too (Gold Coast). I've got both Vol 1 & 2 from the US (vol 3 arrives later this month) I ordered there as I am getting the special edition (DTS audio)

The show is very good. Diffrent to the movies. Example, the whole thing with the puppet master never happened. But all the char from the movie is ther plus a couple more in the team.

It is one of the best anime series I have seen.

Cool, I guess I'll have to give it a look then... I'm hanging out for GitS 2 myself.

Have you seen Excel Saga by any chance? Now there's an anime thats guaranteed to cause brain damage...

DivX or XVid. The qualitydifference isn't much.
THe best tool for the job is PocketDivXEncoder (encodes XVID & DivX, resizes). Very easy too use, and the results are more than exceptable. You could also use Dr.Divx.

I've seen the first 2-3 episodes of FMP... not bad.

As to CSI:Miami, I'm saving myself for CSI:Boise, Idaho.

I'm using Gordian Knot at the moment to make my first few XviD's. I get my PMP-120 tonight so i'll see how they turn out.

BTW: I have seen around this forum PiMP-120. What is the 'i' for?

Haven't seen fumoffu.

I LOVE C.S.I but hate C.S.I Miami for some reasion.

Where I am buying my PMP-120 is also the Gold Coast's biggest sellers of Anime DVD's (JB Hi-Fi). I am eyeing off a anime there called 'The Twelve Kingdoms'. It looks interesting but I'm unsure (haven't had time to d/l a ep to see how it is)

Good News and bad news.

Good News: I got my PMP 120
Bad News: None of my XviD avi play well.

It plays on my PC but in the PMP it plays ok for a sec then gets jumbled. Hmm maybe it is becouse I used some of the advance features of XviD like b-frames etc...

My old Divx files all work, but they were encoded for my iPAQ. They are at 320x240 but very low bit rate (150kbit video and 22kbit audio) but are still watchable (a 90min movies is around 128mb)

Seeing this forum today I have read that there is a new firmware out. Dose anyone know if this will fix the XviD? If not I'll have to rencode all my videos again.

Run it through the Media Converter. Ive yet to encode anything that played back worth a crap without going through the media converter.

Thumbs up

I use pocketdivxencoder to encode XVID's. They play back very well.
Maybe you should give it a try.
I haven't compared XVID's and DIVX5 yet. I'll try to encode both using PocketDivxENcoder, then i'll let you know.
