When you connect it to your computer, can you browse through the harddrive at all ? If so, save your iRiversys folder, save your files, format the entire harddrive using FAT32 and try again.

If your computer does not recognize the drive at all it might be a drive problem which iRiver can fix through the warranty service.

Uh, yeah - the PMP is supposed to be a fat (or, vfat) partition, no ntfs allowed.

Sounds like a faulty drive to me but, if you get at least a "Mass Storage Device has been found.." or something similar, try using Partition Magic to repartition the entire hard drive, close the player, open it again, and copy the iRiversys folder to it and restart your player.

If the drive is undetectable then you might want to contact iRiver's customer support to set you up an RMA.
