New battery dies after 40 minutes, faulty?

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me out, though it's probably a stupid question.

I recently bought an iriver pmp140 from ebay that arrived yesterday. I charged it up initially for 4 hours until the light went off. It lasted about an hour afterwards, but I only viewed about 10 minutes of video and used the rest of the time to transfer files. After the hour it powered down and indicated the battery was flat. I then charged it again and went to bed, today it worked for about 40 minutes of video viewing spread out over approx. 90 minutes (on and off use as I'm at work), then switched itself off. If I turn it back on now it powers down again after a few seconds.

I'm thinking that's not normal, but thought I should ask around as I couldn't find anything in the manual. Will this improve after it's been charged several times, or is it a faulty battery?

Also the charger that I received was not new, it had scratches and some sort of red crap stuck to the outside (though only to the rubber coating, it isn't anywhere near the plugs at either end). I don't know if this would cause problems.

After charging both times the battery indicator showed full, then dropped to 3 bars within about a minute, then the rest went gradually until it shut itself off each time.

Many thanks if someone could assist.

Sounds like a faulty battery to me. And, by charger you mean the DC Adaptor ?

Also, how effective is the USB charging? As a workaround would I be able to plug the device into my PC at work and use for extended periods? (Unfortunately we're not permitted to use the power point for charging, I'm sure they'll do the same for the USB ports at some point, but until then it's a loophole I can use).

I do. It's actually a US adaptor used with an Australian power outlet via a plug converter (the voltage is compatible though).

Well I use the USB for charging all the time and I suggest you do the same. It is a very effective way of charging your PMP and is also safe world wide.

USB charging would be slower and you can't use the PMP while it's charging. (It goes into file transfer mode.) There is one thing that hasn't been mentioned yet though. What's your LCD Brightness set to? Backlighting is a big power drain in portable devices like these. Mine is rarely set to anything but the minimum.

Backlighting! Now that's a thought, I did have it on 80 for a while but put it up to 100. I'll see how it goes on the minimum.

On the plus side though I was going to buy a battery before I went on holidays, they were about AU$35 before I left on ebay. I decided to wait 'til I got back so I'd be here whe it arrived, when I looked again they were only $12 from the same seller
