Just got my PMP-120

Just bought a PMP-120 off of Ebay for an unbelieveable deal. I've been waiting for the next gen video player to be released so as soon as I saw this one, I jumped on it.

My initial impressions are reasonably positive. The video playback is good and while the player will play back all advertised formats, it seems to balk at anything with VBR audio (Which is about, well, everything) and tell you it's an "incompatible format" but it will play it. I've noticed tho that the playback seems to be a bit jerky.

All is not lost, though. IRiver supplies you with a utility to convert the media files into a PMP-120 format. It's pretty much a no-frills video converter. Pick the filename, set the output option quality and click go. Once files have been run through this utility, the playback is much smoother. The utility also seems to have a problem converting mpg files extracted from ReplayTV units, which is kind of a bummer but I'm sure there is a workaround I haven't discovered yet.

All in all, Im happy with the unit so far. I want to get a little more time with it and see how thw rest of the features work but so far Im happy with my purchase.

They say 5 hours on video.....I haven't tested it yet but so far it seems pretty good. The screen shuts off completely when it is in music mode. My one issue is the lplaylist function which is a bit complicated

Maybe.. I can tell you that the PMP-120 is a HUGE step over the RCA Lyra tho. I was leaning heavily toward a PMC player, either the Creative or the iRiver but it looks like playback options on those players are going to be really limited thanks to MS.

In a nutshell, anyone who can handle an MP3 player can handle a PMP-120.

Try running the Replay MPGs through rtvtools to clean up the internal structures. Let us know if it works. --Ken

For High Quality ones, its a bit of a challenge. For medium quality, its pretty straight forward. I just stopped recording in high quality.

the pmp120 should offer better results when used alongside windows media player 10... WMP10 also does all the transcoding for you.

I've run the video on full battery charge continuously for just under 7 hours. Can anyone tell me a good 'free' downloadable ripper to rip from DVD to a format that I can then convert throught the iRiver software. I'm currently using DVDripper, but it's a tad unstable and crashes.

ReplayTV and PMP-140 MPEG to AVI Conversion

I have tested out some 15 different converstion packages to convert the ReplayTV MPEG2 to an AVI format to view shows on the IRiver PMP. The only one I found that worked and was extremely easy to use is the DR DivX (http://www.divx.com/) at $49.99. This has the option to preform batch conversion. I have found that the "Choose Personal Setting" of "TheKid's ReplayTV Encoding" is exceptional, with a resolution of 640 x 352 and DivX video of 1000 kbps average Bitrate. The certified DivX Protable video selection was pretty poor as the audio and video didn't match very well, and the video was incrediblly poor with the conversion. It cuts the size of the MPEG file down to about 1/2 in the AVI format. It does take quite a while to convert.

I use DVArchive to download the files off of the ReplayTV, which can be found at www.dbarchive.org for free.

Hope you find this helpful.

Bill
