file transfers flatten your battery extremely quickly! Its only when I use the USB on the go with my camera that it isn't that bad but thats only small files anyway. Also if you didn't already know you can charge your PMP slowly from your pc's USB connection if its NOT powered on (you'll see that you green light will be on). Only really useful when your desperate and forgot your power supply.

If transferring files without the powercable (mains) then your battery will be from 4 to 1!!! Make sure the power cable is plugged in!

Basically...
Powering a harddrive uses ALOT of power...the battery alone can be sufficient but the hardrive will drain the power out like crazy!...thats y all external harddrives requires a mains adapter plugged in before it works. The USB power is not suffient enough. Hope that explaisn things a bit more clearly Peter

Hi DarkEvilKen!
Well,i have the same problem with my PMP-140. When i listen to music,my battery lasts for about 4 hours. When i watch videos it lasts not even 1 hour. It even looses a lot of energy, when it`s turned off(also when i put the battery out of the PMP....how the hell works that???) It really sucks. I wonder if it`s a problem with the battery or with the HD. Please tell me,if your PMP works normal, when you receive your new battery. I live in Germany but bought my PMP in the U.S. I wrote to IRiver Europe(in Germany) and explained them my problem. They told me,i should send it to the shop where i bought. So,i told them that i bought it in the U.S. and that it would be too expenisve to send it back. Then they told me,i could send it to them for repairing, but i would have to pay for the repair, because in the U.S. you don`t have a European Warranty!!! Wow,it really doesn`t matter, what i do....It seems that i have to pay again. I think it`s a HDD problem, because my PMP often stops and just plays again, when i softly knock on it. But when it`s a HDD problem, why the battery gets also empty, when i put it out? I think i have more than one problem with my PMP........... |

The PMP seems to have a staw coming from the HD to the battery...the HD is sucking the juice out of the battery
Well...usually the indicator are wrong...I will use an iPod and a P900 mobile phone to explain... I watch a few videos, listen to a few tracks...after an 2 hours or so, the battery has gone down from 4 to 1! I think that thats not right but when i carry on using the device for MP3s, etc...astontitionall y it last for ages! I just think that the battery indicators are not accurate. Peter

You do also have to consider what you are listening to?
a 128kbps will drain alot less battery than a 320kbps MP3.... Same for resolution when it comes to videos.

DarkEvilKen, it would help if you spent 5 more seconds typing or run your posts though spellcheck.net first.
I've had near the rated battery life. If you want to listen to music for 10hrs, make sure its 128kbps(or lower) MP3 format. Anything else will suck the battery dry. As for video, 320x240 @ 500kbps would make the battery last near the 4hr mark. Also, do not connect any USB devices to the PMP if you want your battery to live, with a USB device attached, the battery will last ~10 minutes. |

Actually, in order to extend battery life while transferring files, turn the Hold switch to TV instead of LCD. The LCD takes an extreme amount of power, and turning it off elongates your battery life while transferring files.

well sorry for my spelling since i just want to get my thoughts out as uickly as possible.
but yes... most of my music are 128kbit but how much more does a 320kbit really take out from the battery? like.. ifs it was just double then that wouldnt effect it that much. im tlaking about....from 10+ hours of audio playing time to like 2~. and for videos arent most of the video files 320x240 @ 500kbps anyways.... i download anime files and just use something like iriverter to convert them since stupid PMP doenst suport so many codec... but please dont be too critcal with my comments... just tell me what im right or wrong... be friendly |

Yes it does make a very large difference depending on what your music/videos are encoded at.

It depends from the movie content also. Soap operas take less power, hard pr0n takes crazy amount of power, listening of yoga mantras at 96kbps doesn't take power at all, even charges battery back!
Seriously, all this "incredible long battery life" like 5 hours - just marketing trick. Same with 10 hours of mp3 listening. For example - make a loop of one mp3 song and lower sound level to minimum, plus enable 5-sec screen off. It will play LONG time, because HDD will be off all this time, 64mb onboard RAM is enough for one mp3 caching . Same with video - switch to TV out, loop 5sec, make a brightness to minimum, disconnect audio and see. So you can't sue iRiver because of Advertising law - they can prove that it will play. But I'm not sure if you will like to watch movie without audio and with dark screen PS: It's impossible that 10 hours audio = 5 hours video. Video decoding takes much, much power then audio (so 10hrs audio != 5hrs video + 5hrs audio track) plus power hungry LCD screen.... As usual, everything advertised in this world must be divided by 2 Last edited by Equinox : October 12th, 2005 at 10:45 AM. |

Now, i know this may be a wee bit off the original post topic, but i was wondering (On average of course. Considering different bit rates, screen usage, and volume etc. play a role) how long have you guys experienced mp3 playtime from the PMP once the battery reaches the last "bubble" i believe it was shamrockman who posted that it reports usage ranging 0-44% of what it has left, just wondering what some of you guys have experienced
