It's supposed to be like that. You can store any type of file in any folder. But in order to open a music file, you have to go to the main menu and select music, etc etc for video/pictures.

the firmware progress has stopped. and now nobody can be bothered to make a new firmware. so you will have to stick with 2.04

The source files that were released by iRiver for the PMP firmware are not complete (they only released the bits that they were required to under GPL). The PMP firmware is made up of 2 parts:
1) ucLinux & RidgeRun boot loader: The Linux flavor that runs on PMP .
2) PMP custom code: Which provides the graphical interface and the core functionality like playing songs, viewing pictures etc.

AFAIK, the above 2 parts are compiled using Cadenux arm toolchain compiler (which we have, thanks to pmp.breaker) and then are merged together by a script into one firmware file (AllImg.Hex). I was able to compile the ucLinux & RidgeRun using Cadenux but PMP code borked on me while compiling, complaining of missing files. Also, the script which merges the 2 pieces together is missing from the source. If iRiver can provide us with the missing pieces (which they are not obligated to and have no business worth for), then enhancing their firmware with more functionality should not be very tough. Without these missing pieces, building a custom firmware from scratch would require a great deal of patience and spare time.

English version of PMP-100 Firmware 2.04

Hello I found PMP-100 Firmware 2.04 in English on http://www.irivernordic.com/ (looking PMP100 product)

http://www.irivernordic.com/data/pro...100eu-v204.zip
http://www.irivernordic.com/data/pro...04-sysfile.zip

I upgrade my 1.24 firmware to 2.04 successfully, without korean defaut language but english one.

What files was it complaining about?

There does seem to be custom code as well as a bunch of other stuff included. It seems to me that fs/inputserv/ looks like it's the program that does the GUI and responds to keypresses. The program in fs/examples/sighdd is also used, but I'm not really sure for what. The sighdd and inputserv programs are the last things listed in the rc file.

But, according to the MakeImage_Guide.txt file, there does seem to be a folder and script missing. And I'm not entirely sure where the codec info is. (Could it be using a hardware decoder?) But I haven't dug into the code too much, and even if I wanted to experiment I don't have a clue how to setup an ARM cross compiler anyways. Most of this stuff is beyond my experience.

It really a shame if iRiver stop definitly at 2.04 upgrade.
Lots of my MP3 which work with my H140 don't work with the PMP140, and some VBR mp3 have detesting sound because of wrong decoding.

Ok that iRiver sell unfix product because now every company must present their product quickly... But iRiver must give corrective firmware that correct every thing, in order that we'll believe in their new products.

I am not trying to do anything with the firmware due to reasons outlined in my previous post (incomplete firmware source code), unless somebody is willing to convince iRiver to release their non-GPLed code of the firmware I don't see any release of custom firmware built on top of iRiver's own firmware.

EdrickVelLorin: I don't remember right now which files were missing but basically it errored out on MAKE, I'll boot into Linux and give you the details if that helps.

I would be interested in knowing what files are missing. Maybe it's something that wasn't included because it was available elsewhere? Or maybe the stuff that's missing wasn't made by iRiver but by another company like Ingenient?

Hello,

I'm unhappy with the 2.04 firmware because it's still unfix
(VBR MP3 have bad sound, some "black screen" bugs when you do back and forward on a xvid movie),
and it's still impossible to add programs of games emulator on it.
But after all 2.04 is the best firmware for your PMP

2.04 for Europe (also available for US)
http://www.irivernordic.com/data/pro...100eu-v204.zip
(the lastest available iriver site for PMP !!! (but not for PMC sorry))

2.04 for Korea (also available for US)
http://www.shamrockman.net/tutorials/firmwareguide.php (thank you ShamrockMan for this link, and for links to restore old firmware)

I think that it is the "same" firmware, but with EU version, you'll start with a English language,
and with Korean version, you'll start with a Korean language.
It's also possible to change english language of EU version to Korean language... (lol)
I'm french and i think that the EU version is the easest to install for newbie...
and for english people of course.

@+ Odeyssus (i have a dream to play with mario bros on my PMP sniff !!!)

Is anyone actually still working on this, if so i applaud you...
My PMP has been working well since it got repaired earlier this year but
it freezes heaps and has many playback issues. Also i was wondreing what would cause stutter in playback of videos converted with Iriverter with a bitrate of 1500? Does the PMP frameskip to keep in sync?
Anyways, a new pmp firmaware would be great, as *Maybe* we could get those promised games, not from iriver, but from some other genius.

In my experience, 1500 for 640x480 video is pushing the limits of the PMP's hardware. Sometimes it works, sometimes you may lose AV sync. (It doesn't frameskip, it ends up rendering the video frames slower.) If you're converting an existing AVI, you could check the bitrate via GSpot and try to match that bitrate in iriverter. (Not sure what a DVD's bitrate would be, but most of the videos I've been checking out and converting have bitrates in the 600-900 range.

I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for a new firmware. The consensus is that the source code package we have is incomplete. Other then one mysterious script, I'm not sure what all is missing.

Why dont Iriver just give us the script, i mean waht harm is it to them?
I know its not under the gnu agreement but the pmp is an old product, and if they won't help us then why wont they let us help ourselves? andeven if we do get this misterious cod then will anyone be able to make a new firmware out of it? or would it still be a dream....

Hello Everyone
I am new to this forum & I have a problem! I have a PMP120 with the Firmware version 1.23; I got a BOOT FAILURE screen & I can't upgrade or do anything until I reload this version. Does anyone have the firmware version 1.23 for me to reload?
THANK YOU

You could try the 1.24 files from here:
http://www.shamrockman.net/
There are instructions on what to do when you get a bootfailure message along with various firmware versions. Think I got rid of my backed up 1.23 firmware after updating to 2.04.

I have done everything it says in shamrock and the iriver still wont reconise the pmp100.tar as an update, wat should i do? just stay with the 1.13 version or still try and update it? I want to update to 2.04, do i have to upgrade them gradually like go 1.17 then 1.24 etc.

you're not supposed to extract the tar file. You need to extract the zip file onto your PMP and your PMP will extract it and update itself. I'm not sure why it doesn't recognize it if you did this but if it doesn't, then you might wanna read shamrock's article again because it's failproof.
