There do seem to be some problems or limitations with it since there are plenty of cameras that do show up under windows as a removable drive, but don't work with the h3xx.
Here's what's in the manual regarding Camera/Flash Card support.

In the box is a leaflet with compatible devices, with the following text:

Camera's

Nikon coolpix 2100,2200,3100,3200, 4300,4500,SQ etc

Olympus mju 25,30,400,410 / X-250 / E-1 etc
C-3020z, 4000z, 5050z, 700uz, 730uz etc.

Fujifilm Finepix S5000 etc.

Pentax Optio-550 etc.

Some digital camera of Canon, Kodak, Samsung are not supported because they require device drivers.

USB Flash drive manufacturer (Model):

P&C N-Tech (FDISK V2) / Reanet (USB 2.0 Flash Drive) Sarotech (FLex Drive) / Unicom (Pocki Drtive) Sitecsoft (Data Tank) / SKC (EZ-stick) Musetel (Selfdisk), (USB 2.0 Flash Drave), and....

USB external HDD (2.5"_ Manufacturer (Model):

Sarotech (Cutie FHD-253), (Cutie DX FHD-254) Dvico (Momobay UX-2) Macally (PHR-250CU), and...
It's recomended that when interfacing with an external Hard Drive the external hard drive is powered by it's own AC adapter

Further: USB devices must support Universal Mass Storage (aka. UMS) functionality, please see your device manufacturer to determine if this mode is supported.

Edit: and for those wondering, and Flame Grilled will correct me if i'm wrong, there is no end all USB Host Controller that will support every device out there for those of you saying "why didn't iRiver use a different controller to support every camera/flash card".

That would be kool since the PiMP is supposed to play for 5 hours strait (video) compared to av400's 4,5 h. Still, SIZE does matter to me and that's where the av400 wins. I realize that they had the player with the 1,5" screen but it did'nt run on the same firmware as the av-series. Firmware usualy improves drasticly on the second or third version, although it seems their interface worked pretty well first time out, unlike RCA Lyra rd2780.

the av400 is suppose to give 10 hours of mp3 listening and around 3-4 hours of movie watching, and the battery CAN be replaced, however the av480 is suppose to give you something like 16 hours mp3 listening and probably a good amount more hours for movie watching, but it comes at a disadvantage because it is going to be bigger to accomodate the larger battery...i cant remember exactly, but maybe bigger than the pmp...

Whether such a thing is possible or not (and most pcs seem to cope just fine with all ums devices), it does still mean that the product has what most people would call problems or at the very least limitations.

Personally, I'm not bothered since my camera uses a cradle and a cable to connect the camera so i only ever use that for charging the thing anyway, but they seem to have moved away from saying the h3xx supports usb otg like the did initially e.g. the port is labelled usb 1.1 host and its no wonder if people get misled into thinking there's a problem when something isn't supported.

It wouldn't be identical firmware, but the firmware of av100 series would presumably have been used as the foundation for the following products since otherwise there would be a lot of work for them to redo, so its existance would be relevant to archos' portable video player experience.

Iirc the review I saw mentioned figures of 4 hours for the 420 and 4.5 hours for the 480. As far as the player being bigger, i'd expect it to be quite a lot bigger since the 480 would have to be using a 2.5" drive whereas the 420 is meant to be using a 1.8" drive.

There's a depth difference of 6mm, the length and width are identical.
(80Gb vers. is 3.8" LCD, as opposed to 3.5" LCD in 20Gb vers.)

if you consider that USB TG is really a fudge on usb connectivity, it's hardly suprising some kit wont 'talk' to each other properly.

I dont doubt that the 'universal' aspect can be solved, but if USB TG had been part of the whole USB spec (or even USB 2.0 only), a lot of the problems pending TG compatabilty would have had to be tackled from the beginning.

There are 'old' usb devices that still 'play up' with modern USB2 controllers on PC's, so dont be holding yer breath on 'total compliancy' being solved overnight :P

Longview, Yea, compuplus have kickass extended warranties.

Will the PiMP be available in any drives bigger than 40 GB?

There aren't going to be any larger capacity 1.8" drives till later in the year so don't hold your breath waiting for the pmp-160.

Skeeve, I know this but I wondered if iriver might do as archos and release a PVP with a 2.5" disk. But I suppose the answer is no in any case

I think the difference with iriver is that they are just starting out in the pvp market so you wouldn't expect them to want to have to buy special stock of components just for an even bulier and more expensive player.

Does this beat most other portable media centers on the market?
-Before people go off buying it for its cheap price consider this

# Display – 2.5" TFT LCD screen
Most PVPs play it on a 3.5 and a few have a 3.6 inch screen it would be like watching a film on a H300 on this device.

# Video system – PAL/NTSC
Almost all PVPs support these formats

# File formats supported – JPEG/MP3/WAV/ASF
Almost PVPs play these most play more

# Memory – 32MB onboard memory (expandable to 512MB with SD or MMC cards)
- 512 is 1/80th of the storage of the PMP140 so trust me you will struggle to fit a feature film onto a card. The matrix 1 was 700Mb at low quality any lower and it becomes unwatchable.

# Storage capacity – approx. 16 minutes video or 32 minutes music from onboard memory; approx. 3 hours video or 6 hours music with 512MB SD card
-About 60 films fit on my PMP.

# Battery charge time – approx. 3 hours for full charge
As do most devices these days.

# Sound – Built-in loudspeaker and microphone
-PMP100s have this and also a mic too.

On a final note I have yet to work out why a 6month old post has been revived. But hey someone used the search button for once, nice to see someone with a brain in their head rather than the must make new post cant be assed to search people.
