You can also stream movies, TV shows and music that are stored on your computer.
If I had the money, I'd buy it just for that feature

Oh, so I guess the 160Gb capacity wouldn't influence your decision at all then...

The features look great, but I've never liked the position of the buttons on the Archos players, especially how the up/down buttons are offset relative to the left/right ones. To each his/her own I guess, and I'm sure the features would outweigh that little niggle of mine if I had a spare $380.

As an alternative, Shades, if you don't like the button placements, you can always wait for the new Cowon iAudio Q5 60GB player that is expected to sell for about $954.00.

Now that is one neat looking device. I especially like the SPDIF digital audio output and USB host features. Shame it's only 60GB, but I guess you can't have everything. No mention of a card slot either, which the 605 features.

I also think it's ashame that it's priced so high. I think that price is utterly ridiculous.

As for the Archos 605, this is one fine looking player that I might consider at some point in the future. If they improved on the 604 Wifi's screen this might just be a winner.

Yeah I'm looking at the 605/Q5 as well, they're both great products, although my preference goes out to the Q5. Alas, the price is so high.

I agree, I wouldn't pay that much for one. The 605 is reasonably priced IMHO, considering its list of features. Something that combined the best features of the two, at a price between the 605 and Q5 would be perfect.
I wonder if Rockbox will get ported to either of them...

My next player purchase will probably be an iPod video of all things, because of some rather cool accessories in the development pipeline (the advantages of working for a consumer audio company ) Unfortunately I'm not at liberty to divulge any more information at the moment, but I'll be sure to point stuff out as its released, as there are some funky pieces of gear coming out. Stay tuned for the q5 price, cowon originally said us$500 for 40gb and us$550 for 60gb, and only one source have reported the higher price (the folk at iaudiophile are saying the higher price is the uk/european price and expect the Us to be around the original mark). Watch this space............... ....................

As for archos bbd, if you are considering buying it, get it from a place you can easily take it back as archos have a bad rate of returns, but once you get a good one you should be OK.

I've got the 160g, and Wifey has the 30g.

The 30g is very thin and light, the 160 is not bad for the storage available. Mines loaded up with movies I take on the plane with me. I use my 80 Zune for TV.

We each have the DVR station which is nice also, she uses hers more than I use mine.

The Archos work well w/Tivo to go .

I had also considered the Archos, but the codec support is weak as hell for the $$ you pay. And everything else you want as a plug in is extra $$. I just don't play that stupid game. Their business model just stinks IMO. And as for the actual device, BBD.. you can actually ditch your gun, and just use the Archos as a deadly weapon ! Talk about a brick... Sound quality is ok, but a bit shrill from what I've (physically) heard.

Also, customer support isn't the greatest.

If you mess around w/the EQ and use a set of earbuds or headphones that you like I think the sound is OK. I don't listen to all that much music on it though. I have about 10gs of music loaded just in case, and cuz I have the space available.

I use mine primarily for video and for that it works great. I've ripped a bunch of DVD's onto it that I usually don't have time to watch otherwise, it really helps the time on the plane to go by quicker.

The browser and the touch screen works better than the 04 series IMHO, and comes in handy in a pinch or if you don't want to fire the laptop or PC up. That's been negated though somewhat by the iPhone's quick and easy internet abilities.

I do like the being able to wirelessly stream content from other PC's in my house.

Brick? Depends, I'm pretty glad it's big when watching movies, and since that's mostly what I use it for, not really looking for uber portability.

Luckily never had the need for customer service - knock on wood.

Like anything else, plenty of stuff on it could be better, but lots of stuff works pretty good. I've tried a few different types of these players (creative, cowan) and think this one has the most stuff that works that appeals to my needs.
