*steps into iRiver confessional booth*
I..I have a confession to make. I can hardly bring myself to type it... I own an iPod. *hangs head in shame* Bought the 2nd gen 4gb Nano cheap from a mate who got it in a lot of other returned electronic goods, haven't had the chance to power it up & see if it works or not because there wasn't a charging cable/dock, ordered a sync/charge cable and just have to wait for the postie to deliver it (are they actually using carrier pigeons now or still getting their wagons pulled by teams of snails? damn strikes I got it more out of curiosity as I've never held or used an iPod before, don't intend to install itunes so I'm looking at using one of the alternative methods of getting music onto it, RockBox isn't an option as they haven't done a version for the 2nd gen Nano. My two H140's still run strong after having them for years and still use one of them every day (other is a backup unit with identical contents) so there's not much chance of me moving on to another brand. Did try out the earphones though, and as expected, they suck. The cheapie Philips HE205 Eargear I use stomp all over them.

Here we go,
The only reason I joined these forums was because I bought a iriver clix which was a year a ago. Now what is wrong with the Ipod? The Ipod nano sucks ofcourse, but the touch is a beast. Ok so everyone has them, theres no shame Haki, hey at least you have unlimited accessories to it. I would stay with iTunes if I were you. Now I dont have an iPod, but when I held and played with the Touch, I fell in love and said "Technology is amazing." I didnt want to buy the Ipod then because everyone has them. The Ipod Video was nice ONLY because it had so much memory. What Im trying to say is, dont diss Ipod just because we like iRivers. I mean they are popular and make some pretty damn thin players. |

Your comment about the Nano is the most negative part of this thread. In fact, as far as I can tell, everyone who has contributed to this thread apart from yourself owns an iPod (or in the case of P-Man, 3 of them...). |

This sucks... I can't even get rid of this Apple crap. That proves a couple of things, it is a fad/bandwagon and the ipod isn't all that. I never asked to be part of it but since I was I did it for as long as I could stand.

None of that made sense, especially in this thread. I'd hardly call the 'pod a fad, nor imply that those of us here who happen to own one are jumping on a "bandwagon," for whatever reason. Fact is, I sadly turned in my H320 (which I loved like woman) after two years of battery problems. Even then, the only reason I did that was to cash in a 3-year extended warranty. The iPod Classic was/is the Best Buy offering that suited my needs best, not because I suddenly fell st00pid with (cr)Apple's marketing scheme. Further, the Classic is 1 of 4 DAPs I own. Were I the type to jump on bandwagons, I'd go get a Shuffle, a Touch, and a Nano to replace what I have.
Pre-Gen5, iPods were over-hyped and definitely over-priced. Now, at least with some of the new line-up, there damned good machines priced competitively. Buuuuuuut I'm an idiot @ iLounge, so I expect to be branded the same by certain fanbois of a different color.... Jebus....

Put it this way Apple listened to us misticriverarians and made a half decent hard drive dap, with a superb battery life. So we take the credit for the turnaround

Oh dear what have I started
My post was pure tongue-in-cheek, really I couldn't give a monkeys what brand (or model) of player anyone is aligned to. When I researched getting a harddrive mp3 player a few years ago I didn't include the iPod range in my research for one vital fact: no UMS. The *only* real thing I envy of the iPods made now are the larger harddrives, back when I got my iHP-140, 40gb was the maximum any small-form factor mp3 player had. If I could buy a 200gb+ mp3 player with the same size/functionality of my H140 (especially the inclusion of a full function in-line remote) I'd jump at it, but sadly the market has been going more towards flash drives (not enough space!) and 'gimmicks' like video playback. Horses for courses, which is why I bought an Archos AV500 a couple of years ago and is great, except my mate spilt water on it last weekend and screwed it up a bit, won't turn on without external power, the buttons don't work properly and sometimes it keeps thinking the X (stop/shutdown) button is always pressed - still works by remote though.

Welp... I guess I'm gonna be the biggest hypocrite here for the moment. I got a touch to hold me over till the w10 gets here. You can rag on me all you want, I don't care.
BTW, this is made on the touch. |

Yeah... just like the ipod video being the best form factor for video (when it came out) the touch seems to be the best form factor for internet because I consider this thing an internet based pda before I consider it an mp3 player or video player.
I don't see any of them as an ipod or what apple considers them. |

OK - Melody confession time too...I also now am the (not so) proud owner of an Ipod Nano. Just after I ordered my batteries from Licketysplit!
Seriously, I won it in a contest. We decided that since there are so many cool accessories for it, we would let our 6 year old use it, and take it camping with us. So, I plugged it in, charged it up, and naively dragged and dropped some music onto it using My Computer on, well, my computer. Yeah........ this doesn't work so well. So, I'm facing the prospect of using Itunes, which I have used before for a friend's Nano. But, me no likee. So, my question is...do I have any alternatives? I tried searching Itunes in this forum but the keyword links must be broken or something. I remember once reading somewhere about a clone program of Itunes. Anyone remember what it's called? Also, is there any way to turn my Nano into a true UMS? (I'm thinking NO, but, hey, a girl can dream, can't she?). Thanks in advance! BTW, the Nano is pretty sexy, I have to admit. But, today I saw the new Zune 80 GB and nearly passed out. I'm truly in love! So, now I'm hoping that my husband screws up my H320 with the battery replacement so I can get that one. OK, I'm not, but WOW that was one hot player! |

You might wanna check out my own thread of shame.
People were kind enough to list some alternatives for me. |
