I hate iTunes too. There is another option when using an iPod. When I was using my wifes iPod mini, a friend told me about software called ephpod. It is not as bloated and got me around the issues of registering the ipod to my work PC. If you need to support a family members iPod, and want to try something a little cleaner that iTunes, check out the Ephpod software.

As a Linux only user now, Apple have alienated themselves from the market I represent. This not only bothers me on a moral level, but on a personal one as well. As long as their famed iTunes software is running the show, their lack of respect for anyone not wanting to comply with their software standards will be ever apparent.

I find it a shame too, considering that:

A. Being a fan of tech and gizmos and audio stuff in general, Apple tend to get not only the most press, but the largest nation wide release stock, and usually bury any type of competition in the process, and I find this unfair.

B. DAPs with similar specs or even better ones sometimes get the shaft and become unavailable at larger BnM stores, forcing us to look to the internet which can become an issue at times...

C. Sometimes Apple just puts out a really nice device, which the touch seems to be, but then goes and makes it untouchable for people who can't or won't use iTunes. Why should anyone be locked into using one piece of software ?

And no, I don't want to have to rely on either ROCKbox or some 12 year old to crack the firmware either...

Their website says "may not work with new ipods"

Engadget have addressed this though and offer an RSS feed without any Apple news whatsoever, although I think this is starting to fall into disrepair...

That doesn't solve the problem though - I don't want zero Apple news, I just don't think that 'new iPhone firmware might be hackable' warrants a separate story, especially not one that they then post twice, once on the main blog and again in the EngadgetMobile blog.
It's a joke.

The RSS feed was/is pretty much pointless if you still read actual websites and not a fancy RSS feed.
I do still enjoy reading engadget though despite the insane amount of iPhone coverage. It's just a case of ignoring news you aren't interested in. It's the same with anything. If I'm watching the news on TV and some story that doesn't interest me comes on (such as the inquest into Princess Diana's death) I'd either switch over to a different channel, switch off the TV and do something else or just drift off in my head and think about kittens and fast cars.

I've started using something called PoddoX, allows (sort of) drag and drop, you put the exe where you want it, open the (500kb) program, click settings, then "Register to Explorer's context menu", and then as far as I know you just right click on a folder/song and click Copy to iPod.

I've yet to try this actual feature because my 5.5g iPoo is at apple because the battery life started being rubbish and my warrenty expires in 3 days, thought I might as well get it done by apple for free...
Also I'm not sure if it works with new iPod touch's, it works with the 3g nano and classic though according to the changelog on their site:

Would be nice if it worked w/the touch, but I kind of doubt it. Apple seems to be getting even more "touchy" about people using apps other than their own.

They seem to make more and more attempts to block the use of anyone else's apps with every firmware "upgrade".

Well, I tried viewing the PoddoX site in English, but all I got was a bunch of gibberish, that apparently, was written by BBD:

Quote:
Installation

PoddoX doesn’t need no installation. It consists of a single executable file that can be copied to your computer or your iPod.
:P

Red face

Well I bought myself an iPod Touch. Got tired of waiting for the highly anticipated W10. Still no release date or full specifications. I really don't know the direction iriver is going. My last from iriver was the clix. Until a 16gb W10 comes out, my money is going to Apple. Sad. Bring on the 3rd party applications!

Oh come on... We know that your real name is "Rich" Jeff ! So just stop being cheap and pick one up bub ! I've been thinking about getting one, but I'm also waiting to see if Samsung releases a larger capacity touch ... the one they have now looks pretty sweet and is of course of the drag/drop variation, so I'd love to choose that over a proprietary system like the touch requires....

Still though, the Touch looks pretty sweet. If my friend still worked for Apple, I'd get it with the discount. Before he quit, they gave him an iPhone for free. Good timing eh ?
