So, I've finally given in

Right, so after owning my iRiver H360 (originally an H340) for over 3 years, I've finally given in and bought myself a brand spanking new iPod Video 80GB.

I'm looking to install RockBox on it (duhh). I got it because I just didn't want to go through the hassle of finding another great mp3 player, and the Apple pretty much just owns now anyways. The Gigabeat, H300, X5, were all great in their time, but right now, there just isn't a competitor for the iPod's easy to use functions, both in the player and on the computer. I hate iTunes though... it's madly slow.

And while I'm on it, I've still got a 30GB X5L, I just didn't want to use it though.

Your opinions... good buy, bad buy?

You're the only person who can answer that.
If it suits your needs and you're happy with it, it's a good buy; If it doesn't suit your needs, then it was a stupid buy and if you're not happy, return it.

My sympathies - only kidding.

Apple has done a good job of sticking with 1 basic machine, and improving it with each successive generation.

I have one, and think well of it.

I feel a little guilty saying it, but I like mine and I don't miss my Rock'd H340 as much as I anticipated. (It really does feel like going to the Dark Side. I imagine this is what it feels like to be a Yankees fan.) Even though I miss the parametric EQ, I'm probably not going to Rockbox it because of warranty issues. I don't like the pre-sets that much and wish it had an adjustable eq on board for fine tuning. I haven't found iTunes to be particularly slow, and I really like using the podcast subscription features. However, I guess I'm one of the very few people who prefer the H340's button set-up over the scroll pad. I liked that I could operate the H340 pretty much without looking at it, so it was great for driving or for making changes without having to pull it out of a jacket pocket. I'm also not crazy about the menu system. It feels like you need to go through more clicks to do anything and I liked Rockbox's shortcuts to certain menus.

Overall though, I'm happy with it. The podcasting subscription stuff is a huge plus for me and tends to outweigh the other inconveniences. I also have to admit (and this really does feel like a dirty little secret), I like the availability of accessories for the iPod. I got a Matias Armor case that I love and a Tivoli iSongbook that meets my needs and, other than the guilt and shame, I'm a pretty happy camper.

Baaaaaah.

Okay, maybe I didn't make it clear. II was asking your opinioin, like, if you would buy an iPod in my situation. I am personally really happy with my iPod.

And yeah, I might not RB it, seems much harder to install than the H3xx. I'll probably use that iPod Wizard thing to change the display though, it looks cool.

I agree with the guy above about the sheer amount of accessories available. It's crazy. When I had the iRiver I used to wish they made accessories, but thing is, if you put a rubber case on a H300 it's gonna be seriously thick.

Well, to be fair, whether anyone else would or wouldn't won't really make any difference - everyone has their own needs and their own ideas about what they want their DAP to do.

Bad buy. Return it right now and buy a new 160G iPOD Classic for the same amount ($349) this coming weekend. Or buy the new 80G iPOD Classic for $249.

Hi!

At the risk of this being a dumb question, if you Rockbox an IPod, must you still use ITunes (and the proprietary IPod mp4 format?). Thanks!

(Hey, if it was a dumb question, at least it's a quick dumb question!)

No, you can just put song on the iPod like a normal hard drive, drag'n'drop. But you can sorta use the iTunes database if you want, there is an unofficial tool to convert the iTunes Db to a Rockbox DB.

And I agree with Gary up there, get a new iPod Classic 80/160 and be done with it for a couple generations.

Rockbox on new iPod Classics

I love the idea of Rockbox on one of the new classics - the prices are great. But I don't know if/when Rockbox will support this new generation.
