Couple of thoughts from a Blackberry and Cingular user

1) At the end of the day, it's still a phone. If the coverage in your area from Cingular sucks, you're SOL.

2) Are you really going to pay $600 for a 2 year contract to have the "it" phone. How are all those hipsters and their $400 Razors feeling now that they are stuck with it for another year?

3) Nice of Apple to set a target for the other cell companies. Not to mention thanks for jacking up the entry price for the top end of the phone market - jackasses.

4) Is it me, or does the loss of the iPod scroll wheel and conversion to touch screen mean Apple is ripping off iRiver?

5) Again with the $600. Think I'll go out and buy a 20 inch HDTV with the same coin and mount it under a cabnet in the kitchen. Much more enjoyment for me from that.

3) The top phones have been this expensive, or maybe 50-100 less. The sidekicks, blackberrys, and all those types have been pretty expensive as technology gets better.
4) Touch screens have been around for a while... don't think anybody can say it's a rip off of anything.

I am about ready to buy a new phone, my old one is now 2.5 years old. I looked at a couple of review sites, and the deal breaker for me is the 100 song limit....

Isn't that the old Motorola 'ROKR' you're on about?

A word of warning, Samsungs don't offer you 'vibrate and ring' on incoming calls (well, unless you flash it with Russian firmware) or messages (there's no work-around for this ).

... my Samsung phone (a m610) lets you have a ringer and vibrate on for incoming calls...

and about the iPhone, I think it is a great device for the money, but I personally do not need a Smartphone at all and hate Cingular so I won't be getting one ever. two other downsides to the iPhone is the lack of support for a 3G network and the fact that it seems like people won't be able to make apps for the phone.

A lot of the new ones don't, the E900, D900, D800, the list is quite long.

As I say, if you have the right region of firmware, you can do it.

hmm, weird, the m610 is a very new phone (only came out a little over a month ago) and I'm using the stock firmware. never really heard of phones not doing that.

Oh well.
It was the first time I'd ever come across it, I must admit.

Still, I love my E900, does everything I want it to.

I still like my D500 - I've had it for almost 2 years now, and me having a gadget for that long is almost unheard of!

People say they don't think they need a smartphone. I'm 18, and I find all kinds of uses for my Blackjack phone (high school requires you stay on top of EVERYTHING).

Cingular has nice discounts on their phones, and their (sound) quality and support are good. On to the iPhone, it's a convergence device, an actual WiFi-iPod and smart-ish phone all-in-one. It's price seems just a little less unjustifiable when you realize what it does, and it really does a lot (and it should do it all very well). The kinks in the web browser, camera refresh rate, and WiFi need to be optimized, but it's a really nice piece of kit. And people, it's only as big as my Blackjack, which means it's very manageable.

*shrug* Ever since the iPod everything that Apple releases is sadly going to be hyped like hell. Yesterday it was on the Indian News, and they behave like they are in the midst of cutting edge technology. BS, we haven't even seen a Mac machine here for gods sake, and they say "Oh, how lovely I can't wait to get an iPhone", idiots, it will takes ages to come to India and ages before its price comes down to earth. Besides by the time it comes there will be probably be better such devices in the market for cheaper as with the case of an iPod (yes I'm suggesting the Cowon and iRiver). Why the crap don't they put stuff like the Cowon A3 or the new iRiver products on the news than put Steve Jobs with with a crappy banana-in-his-mouth-accent presentation.

Good lord... I guess having 2 in different countries wouldn't be too bad. As long as you 2 don't ever hook up I think we all still have a chance at survival

...no not that kind of hooking up...</
