solid state is the same as cf etc it is literally just denoting solid state hardware in that it has no moving parts.
There is a write limit but I think it is so high that it is essentially infinite for all practical purposes, certainly when your talkign about the lifespan of an mp3 player, I think the write limit is something more like 100,000 times, there was a thread very recently on here talking about it, and I think the consensus was that ultimately, whatever the limit, it should'nt curtail the life of the device.
