Issues playing audiobooks (>15 hr) with clix2

I am using the Clix2 to listen to audobooks downloaded from my local library in WMA format with DRM and I have noticed two issues: 1) when scanning through the book with a scan speed set to 60x, the performance gradually degenerates until at about the 10 hour mark it takes several seconds to advance the file position to its next position, and 2) at around 15 hours into the book, the Clix2 restarts the book.

I have submitted a query to iRiver, but I am not too hopeful about their response. I probably have to live with the scanning speed issue, but my thought about size is to split the WMA file into two or more smaller files and sequentially play them. Has anyone found a good (and preferably free) tool that will do this? Do you have any experience with DRM files – in particular, the DRM rights on the new files resulting from the split process? Does anyone have any other advice about how to work around these issues?
