I'll answer my own question
. A few months after I wrote the above message, the D-click system on the S10 failed; it would no longer 'click'. The replacement player I got from my supplier is a lot more responsive and less prone to skipping audible clicks. Apparently I got a player which was on the verge of calling it quits...
