I had worked it out the other way as well and got an answer of -1200-and-something (or whatever precisely it is). Then I kind of went eenie-meenie-minie-mo and picked one to write down.
Given that the equation was being typed, you should really have used an additional set of brackets to make it clear that it was 3x17 and not 6/34 as you can't have 'complex' fractions in a typed environment (that's 'complex' meaning 'big' not the root of -1).
So nyah!
When I said American, I suppose I didn't really mean 'North American' but then I didn't mean 'of the US' either, it was sort of halfway between the two.
No offence to Canada or the Canadians but you are really quite similar to the US. Not to say that the two countries aren't dissimilar in a number of ways as well and are both very much unique but, as Anne points out, the similarities are much stronger than they will be between either of the two and any European country. It's the same with Scotland and England, despite both having fiercely independent national identities, there will still be far more similarities between them than between either of them and the US or Canada.
