Is your player a UMS or MTP player? If it is a UMS player, it should just connect via USB before it even starts rockbox, so rockbox shouldn't interfere with being able to hook it up.
To elaborate on that a little more, if the cable is plugged in to the player and PC while the player is off, it should set up the connection before Rockbox has anything to do with it.
I should know, I've messed up my rockbox install enough times now.
