I don't think it was an accident, either -- the Apple programmers certainly must have been aware of the methods used to unlock iPhones. They could have just written the update to relock them, but NO -- Apple wants control of the whole "experience," and this was a good opportunity to show the casual user who might have been considering installing third party software who's boss and scare them off of using any future hacks.

Actually, the bricking seems to have been spread pretty evenly across hacked phones and un-hacked phones. There are a number of cases of people who have bought an iPhone, taken it home, the first thing they've done is upgrade the firmware and it's bricked on them.
It's just crappy quality control from Apple.
However, they dug themselves into a hole by saying beforehand that upgrading a hacked iPhone would probably brick it in an attempt to lay the blame with the hackers. The problem being that the people who actually own the phones see things differently.
