Along with firmware encryption on other iPods, look at what happened with the latest iPhone firmware update. Some players got BRICKED.
I don't think it was an accident, either -- the Apple programmers certainly must have been aware of the methods used to unlock iPhones. They could have just written the update to relock them, but NO -- Apple wants control of the whole "experience," and this was a good opportunity to show the casual user who might have been considering installing third party software who's boss and scare them off of using any future hacks.
I understand that the carriers usually run the show in the U.S. and Canada, but it should be pretty clear from the encrypted firmware on other iPods that Apple wants to actively discourage any hacking in the future.
