Exclamation ihp-140 exhibiting weird behavior (stuck in USB storage mode)

Hi. Long time lurker making his first post now that his beloved ihp-140 of 3+ years is acting up (typical, huh?)

I've got a weird case that I'm wondering if anyone else has seen or might know what the culprit could be...

My unit keeps entering USB Connected mode on startup, and won't get out. The only way to turn it off once it enters the Connected mode is to turn on hold, then use the reset button. I've tried different combinations of plugging and unplugging the unit into a host system, powering it on and off with/without cable, with/without AC, etc.

This happened after I dropped the unit (not far, and it was in a carrying case). But there were no HD faults at all, just this bizarre behavior.

I've disassembled it, removed the HD, tested it in a USB adapter (still works fine). The disassembled unit when powered on (without HD), reports the HD missing and still attempts to enter USB Connected mode...

I also poked around the USB/ATA daughtercard looking for broken solder joints or missing caps (using the "naked" H140 scans from Rockbox as a guide) and I can't find anything wrong with it. I also tried shorting random pins on the back of the mini-USB connector and that had no effect.

I can't find any specific information about how the bootloader / ISD300 detects the presence of the USB cable so I don't know what to check for physically on the unit with an ohmmeter or anything.

I'm out of ideas and going crazy with DAP withdrawl! Help!
