The Definitive Hard Drive Guide For H1xx And H3xx Players
If you want to replace or upgrade the hard drive in your H1xx or H3xx player, read NPswimdude500's Hard Drive replacement guide (for
H1xx or
H3xx).
If you are still unsure about which model drive to get for your player, read on...
To my knowledge,
only Toshiba branded 1.8" hard drives will fit in the H1xx/H3xx players, due to their slightly different physical size to other brands of 1.8" drive.
Fortunately, Toshiba have a very ordered system for naming their drives, making it easy to determine which drives are suitable replacements for your current drive. Drives that are potential replacements for the H1xx/H3xx have the following model number format:
Examples:
MK2004GAL = 20GB capacity with IDE connector, 5mm high
MK6006GAH = 60GB capacity with IDE connector, 8mm high
MK4009GAL = 40GB capacity with ZIF connector, 5mm high
Update:
Toshiba have a page titled
HDD Model Number Identification, which may also be useful.
Points to note:
Only drives with IDE connectors can be used as direct replacements/upgrades for the H1xx/H3xx players. However, MisticRiver member stolltech.ch successfully installed a ZIF drive in an H340 by building his own ZIF-IDE adapter (details
here).
8mm high drives will only fit in H140 and H340 players. Some people have reported fitting them into H320 players by removing the original hard drive padding. I do not recommend this as the padding is there to protect the drive from external shocks and vibrations.
5mm high drives fit in all other players (H320, H120, H110 etc.) without modification. It is not recommended that 5mm high drives are installed in H140 or H340 players unless adequate padding is added to ensure the drive does not move and bend/snap the pins on the mainboard.
