The new Nanos don't use the same hardware as the old ones, they now have a Wolfson chip in them.
I have the 8GB 2nd gen Nano and I would say the sound quality is as good as my H340. That said, I don't bother using the EQ on either player as I like to listen to my music as it's meant to be and bass boosting ruins it, regardless of the brand of player, so I don't know whether or not you'll agree with me if you try one out.
