What's illegal, and where? Is this USA only?
There are many countries where you have to pay a common fee for using a certain device for a certain application. I guess here in Europe it's about 20 $ on every PC, since you might copy CDs. It's a certain amount on printers, scanners and copying machines for duplicating protected material. It's a certain licence on every fm receiver, regardless of recording. That's the reason whey there are special crippled versions of iriver's players for Europe, the 'pure' editions without fm.
So maybe it's just that they did not want to pay certain licence fees?
