Other versions of firmware are available on here (somewhere). UMS allows you to use the player as flash-drive, just plug in and drag & drop files either way. It places limitations on recording settings, however. IMM firmware requires the use of the IMM software to transfer files but it does not have recording limitations. The IMM firmware, however, will not allow you to transfer anything other than *.REC files OFF the player and ONTO your PC. A *.REC file is one you recorded on the player via the mic or line-in. If you encode files to MP3 and then rename them to *.REC before putting them on the player you can still transfer them back, the player also still plays them since iRiver's *.REC files actually ARE MP3 files really.

Hope that explains the differences. The latest firmwares are 1.65 and 1.85. You can freely go from any version to any other version but changing from UMS to IMM or vice-versa will erase ALL your music files from the player.
